Title: Yankees and Their libido dominande
Post by: Tahn L. on August 27, 2016, 07:03:37 pm
No, it’s not about New Englanders (per se), it’s a new book I have put on my reading list. I loved his description of Yankees.

"In a lecture on institutionalized lying by government delivered at the Mises Institute, Judge Andrew Napolitano introduced his audience to the Latin phrase “libido dominande” that describes such attitudes.  In Latin, it means “lust to dominate.”  Now along comes Clyde Wilson with his new book, The Yankee Problem: An American Dilemma, that describes in great detail the peculiar American version of “libido dominande” that has plagued America (and the world) ever since the Pilgrims landed.

Wilson describes “Yankees” as “that peculiar ethnic group descended from New Englanders, who can be easily recognized by their arrogance, hypocrisy, greed, lack of congeniality, and penchant for ordering other people around” (emphasis added).  This, of course, does not include all New Englanders and their descendants, but a rather small but dominant (and domineering) subset.  “Hillary Rodham Clinton, raised a Northern Methodist in Chicago, is a museum-quality specimen of the Yankee – self-righteous, ruthless, and self-aggrandizing,” writes Wilson."

Yep.  "This "hits the nail on the head".  Reminds me (even though this post was written on the day of my 2nd youngest grandchild's birth) of the thread recently in the "hijack this thread" thread in "general discussion".

There are some people (Hillary Clinton is a brilliant example) who believe they were born to manipulate other people "because that is what is 'good' and 'right'", and the people they manipulate who in turn manipulate others and a good description for them is "useful idiots" know exactly that they are using sophistry to recruit others and lie, cheat and use violence to "get their way" but they feel good about doing these things because they are "morally right".  So the "master" (someone like Hillary Clinton) is a true "libido dominande" and satisfies her urge to dominate others by lying to them, and the "lyee" (the one who was lied to) knows they have been lied to but thinks the lying is "necessary" and morally right and people have to be lied to in order to "mould society to be the way it should be" and so they continue with the lying process.

Just saying ….

"..The word "Yankee" gained popularity in the early to mid nineteenth century to describe a particular brand of New Englander: arrogant, hypocritical, unfriendly, condescending, intolerant, extremely self-righteous, and believing that he and his were God’s chosen people.

Yankees have never shied away from using the coercive powers of the state to compel others to be remade in their image. That’s why compulsory government schooling originated in New England, as did prohibitionism. It’s also why Stalinism took hold in the North (especially in New York City) in the twentieth century, as did its offshoot, neoconservativism, in more recent times. Indeed, many of the more notorious neoconservatives openly admit that they were Stalinists in their youth and have never fully abandoned those beliefs."

A few "totalitarians" know what they are doing, a few are "doing Gods will", some are psychopaths and most are "followers.

I'm learning stuff all the time.  When I was growing up, people used to refer to all Americans as "Yanks", so I thought that a "Yankee" just meant someone from any part of America at all.  Then I learned that it referred only to people from the northern part of the country and it was kind of insulting for a Southerner to be called a "Yankee".  This narrows it even further.

These days it is considered politically incorrect to talk of "Yanks" or "Yankees".  It is sort of like referring to British people as "Poms" (you know from the days of transportation of prisoners to "the colonies" - where they wore prison garb with "prisoner of mother England", or POME written on it).  Oh what a bland, boring world we have created for our children, no one has even officially got a sense of humour any more.

.."This, of course, does not include all New Englanders and their descendants,.." (From the excerpt above)

You may be from Maine but I do not believe you fit any other definition Casca.

Yep, Casca certainly does not fit the description in the OP, so I guess there are some freedomistas in Maine, we must see a danger in generalising.

Although it is (probably) important to distinguish between a Northerner and a Southerner in America, the word "American" seems such a mouthful, so how about a generic term for all Americans:

"Hawaiian short wearers"?

Just about every American I see here is wearing a Hawaiian shirt.

(You got a Hawaiian shirt Casca?)
