Title: You do what you gotta do
Post by: Phil Carson on August 03, 2005, 12:24:13 am
I installed a handgun safe with Simplex Lock system in a vehicle today. Vehicle belongs to a Classmate, Single mom raising one teenager. She received her CCW permit this summer and was curious about something. "Since the state says no Firearms on campus, even if one has a CCW, and I have a 20 mile commute one way, and will have night classes..."

I informed her I did not park on Campus.

"Oh!"

I also mentioned it was not a bad idea to have a lockable container for meeting req's when visiting other states. Not a bad idea if for instance she needed to lock up valuables if going to a gym, on a road trip...etc.

"Oh! "

I just installed it. Told where I and some like minded persons often park. She knows all to well how I feel about one being responsible for one's self and the main idea is to make it home in one peice at the end of the day.

She also bought a new knife that clips to her pocket. Found out I have a cane I sometimes use. Dollar says she ends up with one of those too.

What guns?
;)

Good Job, Phil!  Shame that such sneaking around is necessary since the constitution went through the shredder, but you sound very accomplished at it.  Especially good to help the lady unfamiliar with her options for safety.  Got your good deed for the day done.

        Regards, RN

Since you are wonderin'...... What I installed... :P

Not affliated with these folks or Simplex - Just a website that has pictures to share of various models - I have handled all of these btw.

When I bought my first safe like this some mumbly25somethingplusyears ago , The brand name was Simplex. I purchased it thru a Safe buddy of mine. Let us just say in another life I needed to have some friends in certain businesses for security reasons. I really like this locking mechanism. I have been shown and do know how to bypass the electric locks and dials on various safe designs.

I do NOT do nor do I recommend electrical locks/ mechanisms.

Let us just say one of the things I have some experience in is hiding stuff and keeping stuff secure. I like this lock, no batteries, no hassles to get hands/ fingers in a certain spot to access buttons, well constructed, and I have tried to bust into one...no comment.

Safes only keep and honest person honest. Safes only slow down a BG. The best insurance is to keep mouth shut and not advertise .

Three may keep a secret if two of them are dead--Richard Saunders, [ "Poor Richard's Almanac" ]

So I assist sometimes in doing stuff like this. There are 'things and ways' one can do to keep stuff secure. I prefer to not post too much about these things on Internet.  I mean the BGs already know this stuff - no need to give ideas to folks that well...are riding the fence perhaps.

There are other ways that cost less  monies.  Still I like this Simplex because it works, and does meet / exceed the legal needs some states require.
Feel free to PM if any questions.

HTH

Phil

I can't find the link at the moment, but Illinois just passed a law making a concealed compartment on an automobile illegal. I'll look for the link and post it here.  Your government at work...

We have a small "important papers" box that's somewhat fire-resistant.  While at a flea market a while back I saw where somebody put one of these by some trash,  so I picked it up.  Needs a different lock,  as there weren't any keys with it,  but I got a price on one of those of only $6-8,  way cheaper than buying one of those safes.

Now the only thing I need to consider is how to mount it in the vehicle,  bolts with nylock nuts come to mind,  but I'm also open to other suggestions.  Where to put it in a van is another story.  There are under-seat compartments but this won't work there because of the way it opens.

Comments?

I recently looked at a '91 Econoline van which was a conversion van. One of the features in it was a cooler mounted under the carpet in the floor behind the driver's seat. You couldn't see it unless you knew it was there. It even had a drain tube for your melted ice to run out under the van some place.

Just my 2 cents, but if the weapon is concealed , Who's gonna know? I went through the same thing in the early/mid 90's with the school I went to. Unless there are cavity searches to get on campus (read; Metal detectors).......

Just a thought, not really recommending anything.

BTW, I  just signed up on your board the other day. So.....er......Hello.......  Nice ta meet 'cha.

From Galls.com, a police supplier, I once had a vehicle pistol safe that was bolted under my passenger seat.  A hidden button under my dash released the slide out drawer.  Wasn't outrageously expensive and worked great...I felt sorta like Batman too!  Every vehicle I've owned since then hasn't had space under the seats for the same setup...maybe I should redefine my car-shopping criteria?
