Over the last few months they've been linking the SSA and RMV databases. Went online with it in Jan '04 in MA. Now you can't change your name on your DL without first going to SSA.

Took me 2 months to get mine changed -- as an alien, I had to go to INS first, then SSA, then the RMV.

First time I went to the RMV the supervisor wouldn't accept my UK passport  & UK name change deed as a valid documentation: "This is Massachusetts, we don't take orders from the British Government."

To which I replied: "That war was over 220 something years ago. You won. Get over it."

A week or so later, I went to a different RMV office, the nice young lady changed my licence, took a picture that merely makes me look like a thug, instead of one that makes me look like a psychopathic thug, and I was on my way, mission accomplished in about 30 minutes.

Now that's interesting. And very sad for those of us who change our names more often (and more informally) than our hairstyles. Ah well, one more encouragement simply to bag the whole "in the system" thing, for those of us who can.

Speaking of changing your name informally,  when did it become such a hassle?  In spite of all this nonsense about folks going through a whole court process ("getting permission"),  etc. as far as I know there's NO law that says you can't change your name or use multiple names if you want -- as long as you're not doing so in an attempt to commit fraudulent acts.

Of course,  the power junkies,  be they JBTs or petty bureaucrats,  won't see this as being at all reasonable.  So screw 'em...
