Our pair of angelfish spawned this afternoon.

Fish porn #1 -- just getting started.  Female (marble-colored) swims up along the filter intake tube, depositing strings of eggs; male (mostly silver) passes over eggs and fertilizes them.

Fish porn #2 -- still at it!

Fish porn #3 -- at the 1 hr 15 min point.  Nearly empty!

This is all taking place in a 20-gallon community tank, so there is basically no chance we will see any surviving baby angel fish.  The parents at this moment are furiously trying to discourage a one-foot-long Black Ghost Knife Fish from exploring near their eggs.  But at least they had some fun!

Glad you enjoyed that. 

Fido (the aforementioned foot-long eating machine) had devoured half the eggs by bedtime.  The female angelfish remained furious and tried without success to drive him off; the male gave up after a while.

So we felt bad and decided to violate the Prime Directive.  There are now about a hundred rescued eggs sitting in a floating box in the aquarium.  I don't know if they'll hatch without a parent fanning them, but if they do it should be this evening or tomorrow.

Baby angelfish hatched yesterday.  Today they are tiny balls of translucent egg-yolk with even-tinier squiggling things attached, sorta like a living letter "q".  Way too small for me to photograph.  They resemble angelfish the way that tricycles resemble 747s.

Update: After several failed attempts at hatching rescued eggs and keeping the fry alive, we instead gave the angelfish pair their very own 10-gallon tank and let them do it themselves.  So far, so good.

The parents took excellent care of their babies, and also performed the necessary weeding-out of those who weren't growing well.  We ended up with 13 who reached adulthood.

The last survivor just died this afternoon, at age 8 years and a couple of weeks.

I'll call that a success.

And koodoos to you Bill, that was pretty good and reminded me of the progression of tanks the wife and I had for the kids.  Community tank with plecostamus (sp), tin foil barb, shark, then I introduced just 4 baby Jack Demseys.  That was the end of it.
