Uh-oh.

Does the suitability of fruitcake for survival food use mean that there will now be a Fruitcake! thread in addition to the Twinkies! thread?

Blessed be the fruitcake......

Dog is rather tasty, too.
Once upon a time, when I visited a southeast Asian area, I was instructed not to ask what I was eating.

I had a bunch of Korean guys standing around snickering and watching me enjoy this absolutely wonderful dish.  They asked me in broken English how I liked it and I told them the truth: that it was delicious and I asked what was it?  They replied, "Woof Woof".

I shrugged my shoulders and kept eating.  It was good so why get upset?

Kings and Parliments feared the fruitcake as a source of survival food

Quote
In the 18th century, Europeans were baking fruitcakes using nuts from the harvest for good luck in the following year. The cake was saved and eaten before the next harvest. Fruitcakes proliferated until a law in Europe restricted them to Christmas, weddings,

The peasants used to stock up on fruitcakes to save grains and fruits and resist despots, can't have that, wouldn't be prudent, we need a law......

IIRC, the modern fruitcake is descended from a type of ration made during the Crusades.  An even earlier incarnation might have been "Scripture cakes" which originated in First Century Rome.  I've heard and read anecdotes about their longevity but I don't know of any serious study of the subject.  I do recall the army once considered a "fortified" fruitcake for soldiers on patrol without resupply.  Considerig an average fruitcake has about 1500 to 2000 calores per pound and a one pound cake is pretty compact -- about the size of an empty toilet paper roll -- padre29 could be onto something here.

If'n you don't mind, FDD....  I'm going to try to get a mod to delete this thread.  They asked for a Fruitcake thread like the Twinkie one so I created this one.  Then I thought, well shit!  Why not just continue using the one they've got?

So, hopefully, this thread will disappear.

That's how I got to snake the first time, cept it wasn't Koreans or even anyone foreign.
It was in Campo Kalifornia the serpent in question had been apprehended in the yard and cooked.
I wasn't told til after I ate.
After that I had no issues with python in Malaysia.
Sort of like fish.

I've eaten some pretty wild shit but fruitcake just puts a knot in my gorge.

Hey Bucctoo,

That comment reminded me of an ad for a cartoon my little girl wants to see. I can't remember the name of the movie but the clip had two rats in it talking and one says to the other one " If you can just muscle your way past the gag reflex it opens up a whole new world of food possibilities."

Priceless.

OK,
Admittedly I'm truly straying into HReardon territory here but did you know rats can't vomit?

Actually I'd never really thought about it, but it makes it seem funnier to me now.

or merge them

Besides the smarm, fruitcake really was used as a ration back in the day. there was some decent info that came from that...who knew?

Living on fruitcake doesn't sound very fun though, maybe a fruitcake cookie with the doggie chow mein?

Forgotten perhaps, but not really a secret.  As far back as the Klondike Gold Rush (if not earlier), fruitcakes were carried as emergency or cold weather rations.  They were recommended by Calvin Rutstrum and other outdoor writers of the first half of the 20th century, and were fairly common among cold weather campers until around 1970 or so.

Is this going to degenerate into a dog-recipe thread?  Maybe I need to dig out my cookbook . . .

People talk about unusual foods, and most have tried one or two, but the jokes usually overwhelm any serious discussion.

In answer to your question, a marsh rat will look and taste about like nutria from the same area.  Other diets will tend to make the rat meat look and taste different.
