got corn sheller?
« on: January 11, 2007, 07:37:52 am »

If you grow and grind your own corn it
is nice to have a corn sheller  to get the
dried corn kernels off the cob.  Trust me.
Shelling corn by hand is the pits.  Your
blisters will have blisters.

a new sheller is $180.

maybe you'll find an old one cheap at a
flea market.

Considering I see them at nearly every auction I go to, $180 seems high.

I dunno. Seems like the proper new/used differential in price from what I've seen them go for at auction. Old ones look a little more sophisticaled and have antique value; Stromberg pays shipping on theirs which is not, er, chicken feed.

I've got an old John Deere than belonged to my grandfather.

Wow, $180 for a corn sheller!  I remember using one of those as a kid, to shell popcorn.  It's probably laying around somewhere on a shelf at my Dad's house.  Hasn't been used in years.

I never had a regular corn sheller, just a rubber hammer and paper bags... did a pretty good job for the popcorn I used to grow. Might be a really big job if you grew very much  corn and wanted to shell it all at once, I guess. But it would work, and cost a lot less than $180.

Can this sheller be used for other things or just corn? I've never seen one.

Actually, this is the kind of equipment that a community could buy to use in cooperation, or someone could offer to shell corn for others in the community for a small share of the corn. ML

Well, I shelled lots of popcorn when I was a kid, and it's real easy to do by hand without any kind of tools.  I never got blisters.  I could see where it might be nice for shelling field corn though. The trick is to twist the corn off the cob, that's what works best for shelling it by hand.
