We Are Saddened by Another Campus Shooting

Dear Spacer,

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families touched by yesterday's gun violence at Northern Illinois University.

At a time when the country confronts one mass shooting after another — six separate multiple murders across the country in just the last two weeks — we need to strengthen America's gun laws now more than ever.

Over the years, the Brady Campaign has proposed numerous common-sense measures to reduce and prevent gun violence. It may be difficult to stop 'suicide shooters' like the Northern Illinois University killer, but there are steps we can take as a nation to make us all safer.

Congress' passing and the President's signing of the NICS improvement Amendments Act to strengthen the Brady background checks system was a positive first step. Now, we need to close the gun show loophole.

As we grieve with the victims and families of this latest mass shooting, we also need to take action — to call on public officials, opinion leaders, advocates, and others — indeed, everyone — to do their part to address, and end, the gun violence in our country.

Much more needs to be done to help make our schools and communities safer. We are so grateful that you are with us in this fight.

Sincerely,
Paul Helmke Signature [image]

Hmm... Illinois' oppressive gun legislation did nothing at all to stop this last shooting (as no shooting has ever been stopped by *law*), rather, it merely ensured that
yet another group of victims are unarmed and relatively helpless. Thanks, Brady Campaign! Thanks for saving us from all those evil bystanders!

  I had the same thought when I heard about this.  I know logic needn't apply so there's no point grousing about it.  But if the brady bunch and their ilk were even theoretically right - even trending in a vaguely correct direction - there should be no "gun crime" at all in places like DC, NY and Chicago, and very little in Illinois and California.

And yet...

I did have a sort of vision yesterday evening on my way home, after hearing this on the radio.  A crazed shooter walks into a packed 150-seat lecture hall located in a SANE place.  He whips out a shotgun from his trenchcoat (tangling it slightly in the tails).  He vanishes in a rapidly-expanding pink mist as 150 people defend themselves and one another...Housekeeping is called and the lecture resumes.

Fixed that for you!

Dear Spacer,

Brady Donate 2 This is truly the year for your Brady Campaign and for common sense gun laws.

First, Congress passed, and the President signed, the NICS bill to strengthen the Brady criminal background check system.  Your support made it happen.

Then, a number of Congressional allies stepped up and introduced additional legislation.  Common sense gun laws, like closing the gun show loophole.

Your Brady Campaign is on a roll.  We need your support today to pass strong gun laws!

On January 29, Senators Lautenberg (NJ) and Reed (RI) introduced gun show legislation to keep criminals and other dangerous persons from buying and selling guns without a background check. Brady President Paul Helmke and Virginia Tech families and victims joined the Senators at their widely covered press conference.

And now, The New York Times has called for the presidential candidates to “demand an end to unlicensed gun shows and demand that Congress show courage.”

You see, after years of domination by gun lobby foot soldiers, America has turned the corner on the gun issue.  Lawmakers are supporting our common sense agenda.  That’s why we need your support now.

Last week, Senator Kennedy (MA) and Representative Becerra (CA) introduced a national microstamping bill giving police officers cutting edge identification technology to solve gun crimes.  Thanks to Chapter activism and law enforcement support, your Brady Campaign passed a similar bill in California last fall.  Now we are taking this life-saving technology nationwide.

Please help keep the momentum in Congress.
Help us strengthen the Brady background check system
and pass common sense gun laws now.
Please donate to the Brady Campaign today.

One more thing … and this is not to be believed. The gun lobby and its allies in the Senate are pressing to pass a guns in parks bill that would loosen gun restrictions in national parks and refuges and allow in unloaded, hidden handguns.  That’s more of the same from the gun pushers:  any gun, anywhere, at any time.  But your Brady Campaign is pushing back calling on the Senate and the Interior Secretary to reject this ridiculous and dangerous bill.

Our call for your support is urgent.  The toll on America’s families seems to grow daily.  Five women shot to death in a clothing store in Tinley Park, Illinois; a SWAT officer and three family members murdered in a siege in Los Angeles; two police officers and three city officials gunned down in Kirkwood, Missouri; and most recently, two students shot in class at Louisiana Technical College by a fellow student.

This is the time to strengthen gun laws.  This is time for legislative action.  Please make a gift today.
Sincerely,

... and I cannot help but wonder how different things might have been had there been as few as two trained, licensed, willing individuals in that room who were voluntarily and legally armed.   Just two responsible, peaceful, law-abiding and caring people.  Just two.

(Not that I am for licensing, but just taking this one step at a time...)

... excerpt from blog entry from Dec 12, 2007:

The recent church shooting is a good example. The brute came prepared to kill 100 people. His shooting spree abruptly ended when a woman of the parish shot him with her handgun. He and both of his victims will be firearm death statistics, but there would have been a lot more if she hadn’t acted with courage AND with a gun.

We shouldn't forget this foiled attempt too soon.
