MasterCard-backed biometric ID system launched in Nigeria
Country is trying to consolidate citizens' records and get them to the bank.

Last week, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was one of the first citizens to receive a National eID card, a biometric identification card that will be rolled out to 13 million Nigerians in the near future. Although a handful of countries already use biometric identification systems, Nigeria's will be unique as its pilot program will be branded with MasterCard logos. The program will eventually be expanded to encompass the rest of the country's adult population, and the BBC says that all Nigerians will be required to have such a card by 2019 if they wish to vote in the country's upcoming elections.

The Nigerian government says that putting a payment platform on the ID cards will eventually let citizens receive and spend money from government institutions.

MasterCard has a number of similar partnerships with government institutions in countries like Pakistan and Turkey, as well as the city of Toronto. They all use prepaid cards from Mastercard to dole out government funds.

The Nigerian Identity Management Commission also said that the cards will eventually be able to stand in for passports when the card holder is traveling between West African countries.

Malaysia and Indonesia are two countries that have made significant strides in outfitting their citizens with biometric ID cards. Two years ago, Egypt also sought to make digital ID cards the norm for its citizens, although such a plan has not come to fruition.

Yet another reason to not use the "Public" transport systems.

My Guess? Most of the sheep won't even bleet about being "branded" or "tatooed" because "It keeps me safe !?!?"

Hmmm  The TSA wouldn't shut down a "journalist" would they. Not here in the land of the surveiled er ... uhm .... the phree.

What makes airports special? TSA has already done test runs at train and bus stations. How long until they're at shopping malls and movie theaters and state border crossings? I once thought it would be time to snipe from the woods for the border crossings. Now I'm not sure it's worth the risk.

The bus stations in the larger cities in my state already have an "empty your pockets" inspection. Although the last time I used a bus was several years ago and it was just the Greyhound security guy not the TSA. It probably IS the TSA by now.
I avoid ALL "Public" transportation systems personally. Plane, train, bus et cetera.

TSA may soon stop accepting drivers’ licenses from nine states

...Enforcement of a 2005 federal law that sets identification standards, known as "Real ID," has been long-delayed. But now Department of Homeland Security officials say enforcement is imminent. The "Real ID" law requires states to implement certain security features before they issue IDs and verify the legal residency of anyone to whom they issue an ID card. ...

The law was originally scheduled to go into effect in 2008 but was subject to repeated delays. In recent months, DHS has been telling states those delays are over and that the law will be implemented in 2016. However, any restrictions on air travel won't go into place without at least 120 days' notice, and no state has received such a notice yet. In several states, however, restrictions on entering federal buildings could kick in as early as January 10. ...

The states facing a January expiration are Alaska, California, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Carolina, and Washington. Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands face the same deadline. Minnesota and American Samoa are already listed as non-compliant.

Those states facing the deadline shouldn't be hopeful for a last-minute reprieve. Local and AP news reports say that DHS has already told officials in Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, and Washington that their requests for additional extensions have been denied. ...
