Philosophy Rocks!

I just thought this might be fun and enlightening. :)

What rock song best expresses your personal philosophy?

Even though I don't care much for most of their stuff, Metallica's "Wherever I May Roam" probably works best for me.

(And the road becomes my bride)

And the road becomes my bride.
I have stripped of all but pride.
So in her I do confide,
and she keeps me satisfied...
...gives me all I need.

And with dust in throat I crave,
only knowledge will I save.
To the game you stay a slave

Roamer, wanderer,
Nomad, vagabond,
call me what you will.

But I'll take my time anywhere.
Free to speak my mind anywhere.
And I'll redefine anywhere...

...anywhere I roam.
Where I lay my head is home.

(And the earth becomes my throne)

And the earth becomes my throne.
I adapt to the unknown.
Under wandering stars I've grown.
By myself but not alone.
I ask no one!

And my ties are severed clean.
Less I have the more I gain.
Off the beaten path I reign.

Roamer, wanderer,
Nomad, vagabond,
Call me what you will.

But I'll take my time anywhere.
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere.
And I'll never mind anywhere.

Anywhere I roam.
Where I lay my head is home.
Yeah, yeah.

But I'll take my time anywhere.
I'm free to speak my mind.
And I'll take my find anywhere.

Anywhere I may roam.
Where I lay my head is home,
I say!

But I'll take my time anywhere.
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere.
And I'll redefine anywhere.

Anywhere I may roam.
Where I lay my head is home.

Carved upon my stone:
"My body lies, but still I roam."
Yeah yeah!

Wherever I may roam.
Wherever I may roam.
Woah.

Wherever I may roam.
Wherever I may roam.
Yeah!

Wherever I may wander, wander, wander.
Wherever I may roam.

Yeah, yeah, wherever I may roam.

Yeah, yeah, wherever I may roam.
Wherever I may roam.
Wherever I may roam.

I can only imagine
What it will be like
When I walk
By your side

I can only imagine
What my eyes will see
When your face
Is before me
I can only imagine

[Chorus:]
Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine

I can only imagine
When that day comes
And I find myself
Standing in the Son

I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever
Forever worship You
I can only imagine

[Chorus]

I can only imagine [x2]

I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever, forever worship you

The Beat Goes On

The beat goes on, the beat goes on
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain
La de da de de, la de da de da

Charleston was once the rage, uh huh
History has turned the page, uh huh
The mini skirts the current thing, uh huh
Teenybopper is our newborn king, uh huh

The beat goes on, the beat goes on
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain
La de da de de, la de da de da
The grocery store's the super mart, uh huh
Little girls still break their hearts, uh huh
And men still keep on marching off to war
Electrically they keep a baseball score

The beat goes on, the beat goes on
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain
La de da de de, la de da de da
Grandmas sit in chairs and reminisce
Boys keep chasing girls to get a kiss
The cars keep going faster all the time
Bums still cry "hey buddy, have you got a dime"

The beat goes on, the beat goes on
Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain
La de da de de, la de da de da
And the beat goes on...

Cool thread

The Delgados, 'American Trilogy' (One of my favorite bands)

I became accustomed to a kind of social servitude
and no one, I mean no one, could accept what I had become
Selfish, bitter, weak
Enough to make you sick
And lately, I've been feeling there are bits of life I'm stealing
Get me home

At times it seems I will not help
but it's just that I must save myself
from fear that blankets me like mist
on an optimist who insists
it's the simple things that crush
and I'm crying far too much
so much so that I'm thinking my control on life is shrinking

There's a light on in my head and I'm thinking what I said
All the freedom in my brain, I'm alright now
I'm just thinking what to say
Sorry doesn't seem to wash
when there's truths around that I have quashed
and no one, I mean no one, can depress me more than I can
So does that make me weak or should that make me sick?
But lately I've been feeling that I'm gonna give up breathing

There's a light on in my head and I'm thinking what I said
All the fever in my brain, I'm alright now
I can even take the pain
There's a light on in my head and I'm thinking what I said
All the fever in my brain, I'm alright now
I can even take the pain

"Suffer Not the King"
Leslie Fish

All we have of freedom
All we use or know
Our forefathers bought for us
many years ago
Ancient rights unnoticed
As the breath we draw
Leave to live by no man's leave
Under nature's law

Though they bought us freedom
Not at little cost
Therefore we must watch for kings
Lest our gains be lost
Over all things certain
This is sure indeed
Suffer not the old king
For we know the breed

Give no ear to bondsmen
Bidding us endure
Whining he is weak and far
Crying time will cure
They would beg us barter
Wasting, yielding mood
Pledge the years we hold in trust
And pawn our brothers' blood

How so great their clamor
What so good their claim
Suffer not the old king
Under any name
Nothing here unproven
Nothing new to learn
It is written what shall fall
If the king returns

He will mark our goings
Question whence we came
Set his guards about us
And all in "freedom's" name
He will take our tribute
Toll of all our ware
He will change our gold for arms
That we may not bear

He will peep and mutter
And the night shall bring
Watchers 'neath our window
Lest we mock the king
Strangers of his council
Hirelings of his pay
These will deal our justice out
Sell, deny, delay

We shall drink dishonor
We shall eat abuse
For the land we live in
For the tongue we use
We shall take our station
Dirt beneath his feet
While his hired captains
Jeer us in the street

Cruel in the shadow
Crafty in the sun
Far beyond his borders
Shall his feastings run
Long-forgotten bondage
Dwarfing heart and brain
All our fathers died to loose
He will bind again

Nothing here is guessed at
Random or untrue
Swings the wheel full circle
Brims the cup anew
Nothing here unproven
Nothing here is hid
Step by step and word for word
So the old kings did

Step by step,  word for word
So his rules may read
Suffer not the old king
For we know the breed
All the right they promise
All the wrong they bring
Keepers of the judgment
Suffer not the King!

Oddity.

Not an oddity at all, just my ignorance.  I knew Fish put several Kipling poems to music, and I thought I was reasonably familiar with Kipling poems.  But I didn't know that was one.

Green Grass & High Tides -- The Outlaws :D
In a place you only dream of
Where your soul is always free
Silver stages, golden curtains
Filled my head, plain as can be
As a rainbow grew round the sun
All the stars I've love who died
Came from somewhere beyond the scene you see
These lovely people played just for me
Now if I let you see this place
Where stories all ring true
Will you let me past your face
To see what's really you
It's not for me I ask these questions
As though I were a king
For you have to love, believe and feel
Before the burst of tamborines take you there

(chorus)
Green grass and high tides forever
Castles of stone souls and glory
Lost faces say we adore you
As kings and queens bow and play for you

Those who don't believe me
Find your souls and set them free
Those who do, believe and love
As time will be your key
Time and time again I've thanked them
For a piece of mind
They helped me find myself
Amongst the music and the rhyme
That enchants you there

(repeat chorus)

Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud by David Bowie

(I'm a hopeless romantic, damn I love this song!)

Solemn faced, the village settles down, undetected by the stones.
The Hangman plays the mandolin, before he goes to sleep,
and the last thing on his mind
is the wild eyed boy imprisoned 'neath the covered wooden shaft.
Folds the rope into it's bag...
Blows his pipe of smolders, blankets smoke into the room.
And the day will end for some... as the night begins for one.

Stareing through the message in his eyes, lies a solitary son,
from the mountain they call Freecloud, where the eagle dare not fly.
And the patience in his sigh
Gives no indication for the townsmen to decide...
so the village dreadfull yawns,
Pronouncing gross diversion as the label for the dog
Ooooh it's the madness in his eyes
As he breaks the night to cry...

It's really me...
really you, and really me
It's so hard for us to really be...
really you and really me
You'll lose me though I'm really always...
Free

The mountain moved it's eyes, to the world and realized,
Where the snow had saved a place, for the Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud

And the village dreadful cried, as the moat began to rise
And the smile stayed on the face of the wild eyed boy from freecloud.

And the women once proud clutched the heart of the crowd
as the boulders smashed down from the mountain's hand.
And the magic in the stare of the Wild Eyed Boy said
"Stop now Freecloud! They wont think to cut me down! No No No!

But the cottages fell like a playing card hell
and the tears on the face of the wise boy
came trembling down to the rumbling ground
and the missionary mystics of peace and love
stumbled back to cry among the clouds.
Kicking back the pebbles from the freecloud mountain's track

Not really philosophy, but shows somebody else asked the question I once asked myself about all those opulent government disaster bunkers:  Sure, nobody could stop the honchos from going in.  But what makes them think they'd be welcome to come back out?

Hello!  Remember Us?
By Leslie Fish, again.  Don't know if she wrote it.

Hello!  Hello! Hello!

Hello! Remember us?
The ones you left behind
When half the earth was burning
And all the sky was blind
You lords of wealth and power
Who made the missiles fly
Remember how you hid yourselves
And left us here to die?
Hello!  Hello!  Hello!

Hello!  Remember us?
No doubt you shed a tear
Before you took yourselves below
And left us standing here
Now aren’t you pleased to see us
So many still alive?
Or did you hope to find a world
Where you alone survived?
Hello!  Hello!  Hello!

Hello!  Remember us?
We sure remember you
Remember how our world was
And what you brought it to
And when the dead were buried
The dust all cleared away
We set ourselves about your door
And waited for this day.
Hello!  Hello!  Hello!

Hello!  Remember us?
It seems we’re hard to kill
Though more than half were slaughtered then
Enough are living still
And if now we don’t obey you
Why should you find it strange?
We lived this long without you
And we see no need to change.
Hello!  Hello!  Hello!

Hello!  Remember us?
We swear that this is true
Whatever world remains to us
It will not go to you.
Yes, we know what dreams you harbored
Come kiss them all goodbye
Come up and claim your kingdom now
Come out, stand up and die!
Hello!  Hello!  Hello!

Goodbye!

Nice, Joel.

Wikipedia: Leslie Fish

filk musician, author, and anarchist political activist

Fish has been involved with numerous political causes, most notably
anti-war activism during the Vietnam War, and is a long time member
of the Industrial Workers of the World, a fact referred to in several
of her songs (e.g., "Wobblies From Space", "Leslie's Filks"). She is
also well known as a gun-rights activist, and has asserted that private
gun ownership is the only true protection of individual freedom (a topic
touched on in several of her songs). Because of her distrust of the
stability of modern society, she has in the past worked to organize
groups for carrying on civilization after what she (at one time at
least) considered the imminent collapse of the current society. Her
album Firestorm was in large part meant as a set of instructions for
surviving a nuclear war, on the reasoning that it would be easier to
recall them if they were in lyric form.

Nothing to do with philosophy, but it's about our favorite subject :)

Queen — Spread Your Wings

Sammy was low
Just watching the show
Over and over again
Knew it was time
He'd made up his mind
To leave his dead life behind
His boss said to him
"Boy you'd better begin
To get those crazy notions right out of your head
Sammy who do you think that you are?
You should've been sweeping up the Emerald bar"

Spread your wings and fly away
Fly away, far away
Spread your little wings and fly away
Fly away, far away
Pull yourself together
'Cos you know you should do better
That's because you're a free man

He spends his evenings alone in his hotel room
Keeping his thoughts to himself, he'd be leaving soon
Wishing he was miles and miles away
Nothing in this world, nothing would make him stay

Since he was small
Had no luck at all
Nothing came easy to him
Now it was time
He'd made up his mind
"This could be my last chance"
His boss said to him
"Now listen boy!
           You're always dreaming
You've got no real ambition, you won't get very far
Sammy boy, don't you know who you are?
Why can't you be happy at the Emerald bar?"

So honey

Spread your wings and fly away
Fly away, far away
Spread your little wings and fly away
Fly away, far away
Pull yourself together
'Cos you know you should do better

Most of the teenagers I know are amazed a 52 year old like me can sing along with Green Day on this one . . . .

"American Idiot"

Don't want to be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new mania
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind fuck America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

Well maybe I'm the faggot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along to the age of paranoia.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
For that's enough to argue.

Don't want to be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It's calling out to idiot America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.

"As I Am"
Dream Theater

Don't
Tell me what's in
Tell me how to write
Don't tell me how to win
This fight
Isn't your life
It isn't your right
To take the only thing that's
Mine

Proven over time
It's over your head
Don't try to read between the
Lines
Are clearly defined
Never lose sight of
Something you believe in

Takin' in the view from the outside
Feeling like the underdog
Watching through the window I'm on the outside
Living like the underdog

I've been trying to justify you
In the end I will just defy you

To those who understand, I extend my hand
To the doubtful I demand, take me as I am
Not under your command, I know where I stand
I won't change to fit your plan, Take me as I am

As I am

Still
Running uphill
Swimming against the current
I wish I weren't so
Fucked
Feels like I'm stuck
Lost in a sea of mediocrity

''Slow down,
You're thinking too much
Where is your soul?''
You cannot touch
The way I
Play
Or tell me what to say
You're in the way
Of all that I believe in

Takin' in the view from the outside
Feeling like the underdog
Watching through the window I'm on the outside
Living like the underdog
I've been wasting my breath on you
Open minds will descend upon you

To those who understand, I extend my hand
To the doubtful I demand, take me as I am
Not under your command, I know where I stand
I won't change to fit your plan, take me as I am
