If you can take the battery out as well when not needed.  I also suggest to look into Virgin Mobile for your prepaid needs.  Cheap and national, easy to change numbers, one plan.  I've always found the Tracfones to be expensive, but I might use mine differently.  Even if you don't change phones every 3 months or so, you can get a new number if you let the time period lapse-90 days.  This won't protect you from the NSA or LE if you are on a wanted list but will build a mighty high fence for a stalker or random snoop.

Some folks here swap pre-paid cellphones periodically with their friends.
Very clever.

Of course if they can extrapolate from the cellphone towers where you are moving, I bet if they were monitoring the numbers, they could use those swaps to piece together all the members and locations of your "freedom network", the group who was doing the swapping

I wouldn't put it past them, they have too much time on their hands and unlimited resources!

Another quick note, do be suspicious of phones that don't allow you to take the battery out or make it difficult, rest assured, they probably are GPS enabled.  For a little glimpse of what's ahead we can always look to the "teens":

http://www.canada.com/ottawa/ottawacitizen...d2-20c417a8a48d
It'll turn into a teen stalkers dream come true, as will other forms of this be beneficial to stalkers of all kinds.

Tim, I switch phones every 2 or three months and trade phones with more than 10 people right now.  Each time someone does this, for extra data confusion, make sure you get the number changed.  I have a thread somewhere in the archives here describing how I do it if your interested.  Some might call it convoluted, but it's not that bad.

Peace and Good Day

Not the least bit surprised, Wired had that article on that new Listening Center/ Data gathering facility in Utah........2+ years back.   I have a cellphone and data account and I never use it for anything but mundane purposes.........    If they want to find me, they will find me, I have been too normal for too long.

Between using the Sonar Ping, and Triangulation for old cell phones and the modern GPS with new cell phones, it is simple easy cheezy peasy to locate any cell network user.  The cell companies automatically monitor your routine towers for capacity management, and the same equipment easily modifies to be used for surveillance if the govt has any reason to think you are a terrorist.  all they need to do is install a blade server with some software and compute power and they can do whatever they want/need as far as signal processing.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if DHS actually has a piggy back system on tap for disasters with a simple satellite signal switching everything over.......probably one of the secret clauses that the cellphone providers accepted and wrote off as overhead.

Anyone who sees those indistinctly marked similarly equipped buildings next to telco COs knows that the NSA is always watching.

there is so much encrypted traffic these days that the signal:noise is not going to be much better than unencrypted, assuming they have the equipment to crunch it, which they may or may not. Long keys, random/arbitrary filler, one-time-pads, etc. all help, and if you don't know about those you are well-advised to learn as they are time-tested and effective, particularly in combination.

Even your wifi tracks you, it's insane to me we have like 20 billion cameras looking down watching people, and so few looking up exploring the universe ;)

There are some companies out there that are  selling "privacy" phones that have browsing anonymizer and anti GPS tracking features.  How good they actually are however..........and wether the purchase of one is treated as a watchlist item or not.........

Hi, beating a dead horse here I know, but with the "political and social turmoil" going on in the University of Missouri System right now (if you haven't heard yet, log into your favorite internet search provider and type "MIZZOU" and scroll down) someone has decided it necessary to install fake cell base stations on the university campus, a preliminary move in logging anyone who happens to be at a protest.

How do I know? My phone has identified one. Still don't know what vehicle it is in, but its here.

Easy fix...take a large hammer and hit your phone with it until the largest remaining piece is the # button.
