Dear Elias:
Thank you for taking the time to contact me about the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act -- more commonly referred to as the Wall Street bailout bill. Thousands of Montanans, including many who had never written to an elected official before, contacted my office to express their views about this legislation. After carefully considering all views, asking tough questions, and questioning the long-term impact of this bill, I voted against it.
As a member of the Senate Banking Committee, I was on the front lines for much of this debate. I had the opportunity to question Secretary Paulson and Chairman Bernanke many times over the past few months about the problems with the economy and the government's role in stabilizing our financial institutions. I asked them about the details of this $700 billion bailout program, but I did not get good answers. I wasn't confident that the bailout would help Main Street, small businesses, middle class families, and family farmers.
I fully understand the problems facing our economy and the impact this crunch is having on folks' retirement savings and the availability of credit. However, I do not believe this bailout bill presents the right solution. It fails to directly help Montana families who are struggling with their own mortgages and passes on billions of dollars of debt to our children and grandchildren. It does not take the steps I demanded to strip (not merely restrict) failed executives of their "golden parachutes." And, perhaps most importantly, this legislation does not include any reforms to ensure that these problems never happen again.
I appreciate you taking the time to contact my office and share your views. Legislation of this magnitude affects all of us and it is important to hear from folks like you who have concerns about our economy and our future. Please do not hesitate to contact me again in the future if I can be of further assistance.
Sincerely,
Jon Tester
United States Senator

So, now. Having read Baucus' comments and now comparing them to those of Senator Tester, which Senator would we salute, and which Senator would we shun regarding the single issue of the "Bailout"?
Salute!
