Gun Manuals
« on: November 10, 2008, 03:53:00 pm »

Here is a great site where i was able to download all of my long lost gun manuals.  I'd adivise that a moderator pin this one up toward the top.

Shepherd:

I suggested Stevespages to the Guns and reference info administrator about 2-3 weeks ago but it has not been added to that resource list. This is a deep and useful site.

I was going to check it out, and got this:

Quote
NOT HERE ANYMORE!

The page you are looking for has been taken off-line.

The reason being that some of the greedy, miserable, selfish, unthinking, and useless bastards in the world decided it would be okay to download EVERYTHING available on this page.

Therefore; I have decided that I will take the appropriate action ...

IT HAS BEEN REMOVED!

Basil:

I suppose he got concerned about people taking everything off of his site whether they needed it or not. He must have put thousands of hours in the page he removed. He had manuals for every gun I could imagine. All scanned. He had about 6 1911 versions up on that page. I downloaded one for every one of my guns except the fn 5.7 which wasn't there.

Really sad but it was his work he removed.

Maybe some people downloaded everything just in case the site ever got taken offline.

Oh darn! Just found this thread today.

Wonder why he put everything on line and did so much work on it if he didn't want people to download them? Why make them down loadable, especially free,if he needed to make money off it? Why not charge something up front. Makes no sense to just take it down.

Oh well, back to looking for the book on my old German gun...

It goes something like this:

    From: ISP
    To: Customer
    Subject: Data limit exceeded

    Dear Customer,

Your website has transferred 50 GB of data this month. However, you only paid for 2 GB. Since you didn't reserve bandwidth in advance, penalty rates apply. Please pay $500 within 2 weeks, or suffer the consequences.

    With kind regards,
    Your ISP

    [/list]

In other words, his site became slightly more popular than he anticipated, and he didn't want to figure out how (or it didn't occur to him) to make it a pay site, so he just took it down.

One solution to the bandwith problem would be to make it available via Bittorrent.

Ouch! Too much of a good thing... or, success isn't always what it's cracked up to be. That's a shame. It is too bad he didn't get some help to make it a pay site somehow, as it sounds like it would still be a winner. No way to contact him?

Yeah, it's a shame when trying to do some good backfires like that.

Edit: I hadn't actually visited that site before, but since he has "donate" buttons everywhere, I'm guessing that his ethics are not compatible with a pay site, and he wants to leave it to his visitors' honesty whether and how much to pay for value received.

That's grand, but can become a problem when the ideal butts head with the budget. Don't know how it has anything to do with ethics, however. Nothing unethical about asking for or insisting on honest value for value. You can give stuff away or leave it up to "honor" payments only if you have enough resources to risk. Looks like he ran out of resources.

I just went over and sent in a donation .
While I was there I sent him a short email asking IF I could download copies of the manuals for my rifles.
I only have three so it's not like I need "Everything".
I don't have any manuals for my three so I do hope he will send them to me.

SOoo ....  We should know soon whether the gooch-work-around [patent pending ....] , commonly called "bartering", is at all effective with this fellow.

    {fingers crossed ....}
