Good choice, ML.
Teaching can be very rewarding. Teaching shooting is perhaps the top of the heap... sharing empowerment, confidence, self-defense capability, community defense ....

You bet, slide... I've been teaching something most of my life. I taught adult volunteer leaders for Boy Scouts of America, nursing at a community college for a while, then all kinds of nurse related things when I worked in hospice. Teaching shooting and self defense pretty much came naturally when I retired. I even taught my rescue corgi to come when he's called, and that was a serious challenge! :)

I bought a nice XDm for Mrs. Sailor.  Her hands are not up to comfortably racking the slide. I good friend had 2 Dillon 650s and no XDm (or anything comparable). We made a great trade.  I finally get that, no make it THE progressive press I have been dreaming and scheming on for decades.

He is very expert at running those Dillons, having spent a couple years running a bank of FIVE.  He is setting mine up to run small pistol primers, and the one he kept to run large pistol primers. Then he will just pop on over to my shop any time he wants to load the little guys.  Big Win-Win ...  With several more subtle pluses built in.

Mrs. Sailor picked out a Smith & Wesson 637 that she can shoot single as well as double action. She has not had a handgun she felt she could reliably operate for quite some time... hand strength limitations.

So many things that we do or cannot do are determined by what we convince ourselves we can or cannot do. Once in a while I pay for it, but I have been surprised many, many times by my medium-built body getting jobs done that powerful-looking, gym-strong men could not. The above inspired me to write about it here: http://www.bitterrootbugle.com/2016/04/10/soaring/

I am not convinced Mrs. Sailor cannot operate XDm, Glock or Rossi handguns that I gave her, but what is in my head is quite irrelevant.  For her to be capable of self-defense, operating the guns is a fundamental requirement. Selecting her own is an important key.  The mind-muscle-hardware combination is now working together.

Glad your lady got a gun she felt comfortable using, but dang. Wish I could have spent a few hours with her.  Strengthening the hands and arms is so important for a lot of things beyond racking a gun... but whatever. I teach a lot of ladies to shoot, and the only ones who just can't seem to get past the slide thing are those with the long, fake fingernails. I give up on them, and we concentrate on revolvers. :)

I and several other coaches with many success stories behind us could not get her to push the grip hand into the slide hand.  "I CAN'T" was stronger than anything we tried to teach her.  At some point you have to change tools to get past that particular barrier.

I also have to remind myself, she does have arthritis. Her joints do have some pain. I cannot feel what she feels. Things I can ignore or work through are not the same for her. Many of our differences are strengths for the team we make up. I have to let this one be.

For what it's worth, the CZ-75, Jericho 941, and the EAA Witness (at last in 9mm) are pretty easy to work despite the fact that there's less slide to actually grip.  I know this because my mother, who has weak hands, can rack both of the CZ-75Bs, the Jericho 941, and the 9mm Witness in our house.  She has trouble with the 10mm Witness, but in fairness, even I think the recoil spring is pretty stiff in that one.

Technique has a lot to do with it, too.  There are several different ways one can rack the slide on a semi-auto handgun and some of them are easier than others.  If you're sure she's using the best technique for her and she's still having trouble, then you're right, it's time to change equipment.

Sounds like it worked out for both of you in the end.  Get that Dillon going, make some ammo, and get the missus some trigger time with her new sidearm.

I went through same with mine but she could jack the Kahr 9 when new.  A box of shells and 5 years later NO.  Had to go down to 22 lr.  Similar with the 12 gauge riot gun, had to find a snake charmer 410, but do to advanced stage osteoporosis.  I did not want her shoulder to break off.

Now I am trying to find one of those Keltec 22 mags for her to try.  May have to get one of the Ti reel guns in 22 mag.

remember this saying when you run into an unwilling gun buyer (spouse), "What price do you want me to put on your Safety?"

Joined a Militia.

Made plans for a Drone and Aerial Recon resistant Squad BOL with Gen. H's approval. If it works for my infantry squad, he may recommend it to the rest of the squadrons.

Basic Training is going to be held in the fall, run by former French Paratrooper and former US Army Ranger.

I'm looking forward to the challenge. I want to have the power to protect people, and if I pass muster, and get through all of the training they offer, I'll be that much closer to it.

Don't get me wrong here. but keep in mind that the people you will most likely be going up against are pros that train all the time (Military).
just something to think about, now if it is the cops, you will be better prepared than most of them.
May I ask how long is your boot camp?

again, something to think about.
Army boot camp is 6 weeks long
Marine Corps boot camp is 13 weeks long.
then there is ITS Infantry Training School which can be over 6 months long depending on what they are training for.
So remember that when you do your training.
What it is you will be fighting against.

First 2 weeks is basic. Further sessions will be held for combat medics and other positions. We can't devote as much time to training together as the Military does*, but we all train individually. Since my squad's AO is mountainous terrain, I'm hiking with full load in the foothills near my home. Did 5 miles through rocky woodlands yesterday.

*We're widely dispersed atm, and unlike military guys, we have other jobs and obligations. We do have BO plans that incorporate our families in the event of TEOTWAWKI. The General has voiced the beginnings of plans for extraction teams. (The Militia has several hundred members, so this is realistic planning.)
