The money quote is in bold:

Quote
Police found the charred remains of a napkin stuffed into the exposed framing of Lyons' home in Mountlake Terrace, a north Seattle suburb, along with a small fire starter, a device used to ignite fireplaces.

Lyons' arrest came after police learned a grocery store card in his name showed he had purchased several fire starters.

Hmmm, anyone have any enemies.  I could think of some things that might get someone in trouble.  How about a basket full of sudafed?

I always feel a little guilty spending more on groceries because I refuse to let them track my purchases. This kind of story renews my vigor, however. Cash tells no tales, yet...

You know, sometimes you can get lucky and find a cashier who is willing to just give you a card with no info. I got an Albertson's card with absolutely nothing filled out on the form. Not even a name.
Even if you get some cashier who insists that you fill one out, who's to say that you have to give them your real info?
Unless you're planning to use it as a check cashing card...which would defeat the purpose of your objection in the first place...I can't see how they'll demand to see your DL or any other ID. Even if they ask after you filled out all that info and you just say you forgot it, what is that kid gonna do? "Ah, don't worry about it."

I was at the store last week, one I don't normally shop at.  The cashier asked if I had their card, I replied "no," and she swiped a generic one that she kept by the register so I could save a little anyhow.

Maybe you could make friends with a cashier who'll do the same for you on a regular basis.  Cuz this kind of tracking don't fly for us fireflies.

I never use their cards.  Well, that's not true.  I often play dumb and sign up for a new card every time I shop.  I then seem to lose the card on the way out of the store near a convienent trash can.  Odd that.

Junk data is useless.  If you do fill one out, lie, lie, lie and dump it often.

Get a card under a pseudonym. Use cash only ( they will crossref any bank cards used ).

Throw it away in a few months and get another. Pretty simple.

The only problem I have with getting multiple IDs with a fake name is that it falsely elevates the number of card users the store can claim they have. When someone raises privacy concerns with the store, their standard response is "If people are so opposed to these cards, why do we have eleventy-billion people carrying them?" By using one of their cards, even with a fake ID, you're giving tacit approval to their system. I'd rather spend my money at stores that don't require cards, even if I have to spend a little more.

I don't use them anymore either- matter of fact I raise hell in stores that use them- but if anyone wants some information of a fake person along with a card number, just let me know.  You can just create your own barcode like that guy did with his safeway card.  At last check he had over a thousand people using his number.
