I just watched one of those nearly perfect indie movies that nobody's ever heard of -- Humboldt County.

It's billed as a comedy, and it is funny. But it's much, much more than that.

I won't say too much more other than, "See it!" But the title does give a pretty large clue to what the story might focus on. (Hint: It's not the redwoods.  :rolleyes:)

Hasn't anybody else seen this marvelous little movie? Sob! I want to do some sharing!

It's really, really, really a great little film. Funny. And deep at the same time. The fact that it's also a sympathetic look at cannabis growing and "alternate lifestyles" is just a great bonus.

PLEASE somebody ... say you've watched it. (But only if you actually have, wiseguys ...)

I watched the first 72 minutes of it, and apparently have to wait 54 more minutes before I can watch the rest.

Based on your recommendation a short time ago, I have encouraged our Netflix tender to bring it to us. At two per month, it is a slow process. Please be patient, I so want to make you happy and discuss it.  I'll renew my request tonight, but it will still take time.

You really have me excited to see it.

Just finished it. It was very good. Made me think about a bumper sticker I saw on a VW wagon about 10 years ago that said
"U.S.- out of Humboldt County Now".   :laugh:

It was very nice.  I enjoyed it.  It was sympathetic, but still showed some downside to living as an outlaw, and perhaps some downside to living completely without structure or order.  (I'm thinking of the tragic character of Max.)

Of course, I couldn't help thinking how stupid it is that FedGov persecutes this plant.  The effort and expense wasted is just tragic.

 :laugh: Yep, exactly! And of course, Humboldt County is smack in the middle of the famous Jefferson state.

Slidemansailor, thank your Netflix tender for agreeing to move it up in the queue! I don't think either you or she will regret it. And The Thin Blue Line is worth watching, too. Enjoy.

Thank you, Klapton. Yep. Exactly. (Without giving any spoilers) I thought one of the great things about the movie was how balanced it was. Peter (lead character, for those who haven't seen it) gets jolted by new ideas and ways of living, but by the alternatives aren't presented as all rosy and positive.

Also seemed as if the moviemakers knew their subject awfully well -- like knowing the black-magic number of pot plants that trigger fed interest.

And the positives also seemed so true. Very small spoiler: [spoiler]The bit about the school. Just that tiny little moment in the film about the school ... didn't you think that was wonderful?[/spoiler]

The documentary.... the painfully slow and dry documentary.... one of the few videos that I turned off before it ended.  The good news is, since the monitor was already warmed up, we enjoyed Karaoke for the rest of the evening.
