Fish oil supplement
« on: December 17, 2008, 04:46:59 pm »

The Mrs. & I want to start taking a fish oil supplement.  My previous experience with them is the unpleasant "fish belch".  (We're not really fish eaters.)

Does anyone have any recommendations for a particular brand that is less likely to cause this side effect?
  -OR-
Is there a way to consume them that reduces this side effect?

My doc put me on fish oil because my hdl (the good cholesterol) level was too low. The nurse told me that the fish oil capsules are now available with an enteric coating that prevents fish burps. I got mine at CVS. It's the house brand and is simply called Odorless Fish Oil. All I can say is that it works. No fish burps! Being straight oil it was sort of rich at first which made my tummy produce more acid but it has since adapted.

Try flaxseed oil - it has the same EPA and DHA, but in a better ratio for most of us meat-eaters.  No fish burp at all - it tastes like grass.

More like cow burps while chewing their cud.  Just kidding; I haven't had any problem at all, and I did have some issues with fish oil.

Good luck.

Peace,
