Deputy faces charges of unlawful use of a stun gun in strip club incident

A Multnomah County corrections deputy faces allegations of harassment and unlawful use of an electric stun gun stemming from an off-duty disturbance at a Northeast Portland strip club.

Steven Douglas Cowles, 44, through his attorney, will be arraigned this morning on the misdemeanor charges in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

Portland police were called to Jody's Bar & Grill, 12035 N.E. Glisan St., at 9:59 p.m. June 26.

Cowles was drinking at the strip club when he saw another man talking with an employee of the club. Cowles told authorities that he thought the man had threatened the club employee and that's why he Tasered the man, Multnomah County Sheriff Bob Skipper said.

In order for that to happen, the prosecutor would have to concede that tasers are deadly weapons.

That ain't gonna happen.
