Yes!
You don't have time to go get your handgun or say your shotgun to defend yourself or your family.  If you have a simple front door that is not furthered strengthened then it only take a home invasion person(s) only 4 seconds to gain entry into your home (learned that in my concealed carry class). 
You also have to make sure your firearm is already loaded with one in the chamber and know how to use your safety.  It doesn't do you any good to have an unloaded firearm in the house.  What, are you going to ask the home invasion person to wait while you load?

Absolutely. Why would I let my guard down at my most personal place? Also have 2 shotguns and an AK stashed in easy to reach spots around the house.

If there is an Immediate Threat, yes.  Otherwise there are enough improvised/real weapons around that look "normal" but would get the job done.

Thanks all for the responses. The more I carry, the more comfortable I am with the situation. More like putting on a watch - habit I suppose.

I've noticed that Home Invasion radius from the biggest city (about 45 - 1 hour away) has extended another 20 miles or so from the mid spring time frame. And so have the injuries/casualties of the homeowners.

True we are further out, not on a main highway where "crash and grab" would work well, observant with the traffic patterns, etc. - never hurts to at least prepare a bit.

Yes, I carry most of the time inside my home - and have more than one firearm available in most areas inside. Outside, I don't even go to the trash can unarmed.

People tell me all the time that they "have a gun" or that they would carry it if "they thought they needed it." An attack can come at any time, place and probably will at the time and place you least expect it. Criminals look for opportunity, and they want easy helpless victims.  A gun in the truck/car/closet is as useless as a glass nail if you are not close enough to grab it in time. Carry it on your body where it belongs.

Other vital requirements (for anyone who wants to defend themselves):
1. ATTITUDE! Know, without question, that you could pull the trigger if you must. This confidence is a visible beacon discouraging attack. If you have not already decided that your life (or that of your children, etc.) is worth the trauma of killing another human being, having a gun won't do you much good.
2. Situational awareness.  All the time, everywhere. You stand down somewhat behind locked doors, of course, but you can't ever truly "zone out." Teach situational awareness to even young children. They can be taken hostage very easily otherwise.
3. Take other security measures! Locked doors, many other things to make attacking you far more difficult... make it more risky to the criminal.
4. A gun (or several) that you can truly control and hit something with. A .357M cannon is useless and dangerous if you can't hit what you aim at. A .22 can be deadly with proper shot placement. Get the tools that actually work for you.
5. Train, practice and train some more. Not just shooting, but all the parts of self defense planning and action.

The first thing I do after I dress in the am, is put my friend on.  If I'm awake I'm packing unless we must go in a place clearly marked X.  And if I'm out of the door on our property, I have my friend clearly visable to anyone driving by or coming onto the property.  I figure they have fair warning as to whether they want to consider anything or not.  I told our Sheriff and his answer was........GOOD FOR YOU......keep it up!  I won't chance being caught, in need and without.  Keep it loaded, and keep it in the safest place possible.........ON YOUR PERSON..........  We are raising one of our grandchildren.  He has never paid any attention to our friends.  And he has had ample opportunities to see it on us.  We don't worry about him jumping on us or roughing around with either of us.  Our friends are secure, snug, and can't move.  I could stand on my head........if I could still do that, LOL..........and it will stay right where it is supposed to be.  I tried several IWB holsters.  What I have found to work best for me is a web hunting belt that has a plastic insert snap catch.  I find the holster made of similar material is perfect for my 9mm's, 380, and even my 38 special.  Tho I usually use the IWB for the 38.  I carry it less than the automatics because I'm not as comfortable with a hammer and a jumping little one.  But, it lays next to my 9mm at night if Mike is gone. 

What are your thoughts on The Judge, 1911, Derringer 410, 18" 20g shotgun, and/or riot gun 20g........  The 1911 is a given, probably in 45.  Still working on the old reliable for home security for middle of the night and possibly not as quick and clear headed in the dark and being surprised........We've been tossing it around.

1. check- I am a war veteran, I survived.
2. check- I am better than most, but still human.
3. check- I have wonderful throw rugs on my floor, they wake me up when I go "white" and will ruin an attackers day if he chases me.   
4. check- plus a bokken, edged weapons hanging decoratively on the wall, a 4d maglite tucked in a handy place for lights out........ETC.
5. check- I hit instinctively given a modern 2 hand stance, I rarely think about the sights anymore, but do use them (I check by maintaining sights after I shoot when practicing.)  I also recently got laser grips attached, it gives a whole new world of flexibility!

I am at my most dangerous when at home, period.  Any house breakers are entering a roach hotel situation as far as I am concerned.

I too pack in the house...carrying a 45 colt loaded with JHP's and since I live alone in a log home, over penetration is not an issue. However, if I am unarmed, than my two pits will do the defense work. It's always nice to have backup with teeth

We are now down to just 2 Australian Shepherds.  When actively competing, training and breeding, we usually had 15.  But, the 2 that are left are a dream.  Our male, *GW*, looks like a sweetheart, just a big ole 65lb teddy bear......don't let that beautiful face fool you.  He doesn't like anyone near me and the baby if Mike is not home, especially men.  Our female, *LoLa*, is only 30+ lbs, but she is the one to watch out for.  At only 18 1/2" at the withers, she can and has taken full grown bulls down by their LIP.........yes, beloved, she is dynamite and damn good at it.  She is the one that cleared the patio fence from the backyard months ago and nailed someone's butt as she chased them over the fence leaving the yard during the night.  When I got to the patio all I saw was a bit of blood on her bib........and it wasn't her's.  LOL  She is my first line of outside defense.  GW is the backup.  She lives up to her name........Judge Judy and she is a real bitch to anyone wanting to access our property.  If you are invited by Mike or me, she is a loveable sweetheart as is GW.  So, yes having a set of backup TEETH is nice.  Loyality to the death for sure.  Oh, Mike brought home a new toy for me............The Judge.  :-0   He got the full weight, not the feather light.  And it is the one with the 3" cylinder/barrel, so I guess you would call it the middle sized one.  And loaded it with 5pellet buckshot and 45lc.  I think I got that right.  Anyway, I'm excited to ck it out, hopefully that will be soon.

Thing with my boy (jake) and girl (jamby) is that I never trained them outside of simple commands of sit and lay down. Pit Bulls and other aggressive style guard dogs don't need to be trained to be more mean, as long as they know you love them, treat them right, they will protect you until their last breath.
