A "funeral show?" Now that's just plain sick.

Funerals are big business.

A "funeral show?" Now that's just plain sick.

Funerals are big business.

I've always thought that there are two "industries" that are based on convincing people that they are needed when in fact they "do" something that is completely unnecessary, and a total waste of time:  The funeral industry and the real estate industry.

(As a child I remember hearing someone tell me that the definition of a government worker is "someone who does a 'job' that doesn't need to be done, and yet has a lot of people convinced that they are not only necessary and 'work hard' but are better than other 'workers'".  Maybe funeral directors and real estate agents ARE better than everyone else because they manage to get money out of people by doing things that don't really need to be done at all)

I don't mean to come across as callous but to me, embalming someone and holding an elaborate funeral for them is like putting a banana skin or an orange peel in a box and spending a heap of money and effort to bury it ceremoniously.  I believe strongly that what is left when someone dies is not the "person" but just their discarded body, just like an orange peel or a banana skin.

Callous?

Not at all.  Burying a embalmed corpse is morbid in my not so humble opinion.  Cremation is my one and only request upon death.  In fact, I hope I'll have family with the intestinal fortitude to place me upon a pyre in the back 40 and send my body back to its base elements by their own hand rather than handing it off to some offal with a title.

So, for all the snowflakes out there:

U. students stressed by finals encounter 'Cry Closet' in library

SALT LAKE CITY — As finals week began Wednesday at the University of Utah, students passing through the J. Willard Marriott Library encountered an unexpected space to help them cope with their testing anxiety.
"The Cry Closet" stood in the middle of a busy passageway, ready to greet stressed-out students.
"I think everyone just needs a safe space sometimes, even if it's in a very public place," said the artist behind the project, senior student Nemo Miller.

Actual image of how it went down  ^_^:

So.  If you're in Arizona and get pulled over, you might want to start with: "I'm sorry for such a ... (wink wink) "Waste of Finite Resources", officer."  [It's a kink in the law - doesn't go on licence or insurance - acc. to internet it should be $15 but mine is $99.  No biggie.]

Sure, burn your skin, that'll fix everything.

https://www.nationalreview.com/news/democrat-pepper-sprays-self-gun-control-ad/

A Colorado congressional candidate has found an eye-catching way of advocating for stricter gun control in his latest campaign ad.
In the ad, released last Friday, Democrat Levi Tillemann shows himself being pepper-sprayed. After a few moments of the yellow spray stinging his face, Tillemann plunges his head into buckets of soap and water and uses a hose to wash his eyes.

I had heard about this, but I hadn't seen it.  That's somewhat amusing.  Stupid, but amusing.

Anybody that eats spicy food very much knows that water just makes it worse.  He'd have been better off rinsing his eyes with milk, or even pickle juice.

Semi-related anecdote to follow:

My best friend growing up was raised by two ex-military people who became cops.  His mom became a security guard, and then some other stuff.  His stepdad stayed a cop until he was forced to retire.

His stepdad would frequently tell us that he didn't bother using pepper spray on black people, because it didn't work.  We thought that was BS, but he said that between himself, his partner, and several other cops who had responded to various calls with him, they had tried pepper spray on multiple black people, and the vast majority of them (admittedly small sample size, but the majority within his sample) just got pissed off, then you had to fight them anyway.  He started going straight to the taser.  According to him, though, pepper spray works great on everybody else.

This is unbelievable, 71% of liberals are willing to risk nuclear war to "make Trump look bad".  This really is "silly stuff"

https://yournews.com/2018/06/14/530867/tv-poll-71-of-liberals-dont-want-peace-with-north/

A live TV poll taken on Michelle Wolf’s Netflix show found that 71% of the comedian’s liberal audience would rather peace with North Korea fail than see Donald Trump take credit for it.
The audience was asked, “Are you sort of hoping we don’t get peace with North Korea so you wouldn’t have to give Trump credit?”

Why doesn't it work on black people?

Interesting thread about ineffectiveness of pepper spray: https://forum.officer.com/forum/officers-and-law-enforcement-professionals-only/the-squad-room/6289-when-pepper-spray-doesn-t-work

These cops see four reasons for failure, none of which is skin color: pain resistant due to drugs, alcohol, mental illness, or goal-orientation.

I asked him the same thing.  He didn't know why, he just knew from experience that it didn't work.

Well this definitely is not "silly stuff", but I just don't know where to put it.  There's no "good news" page, I guess there's not much good news worth recording.

https://i.stuff.co.nz/world/americas/105181885/brave-dog-shields-owner-from-a-poisonous-snake-bite

A woman from the US state of Arizona is thanking Todd, after the dog saved her from a rattlesnake bite.
It was while out on a morning walk with his owner, Paula Godwin, that the golden retriever pup became a hero.
Godwin wrote on Facebook, "it was a beautiful morning, but as we were walking down the hill I almost stepped on a rattlesnake".

Just something to lighten your mood.

https://i.stuff.co.nz/world/americas/105662859/snake-fished-out-of-us-toilet-claimed-by-owners-miles-away

A snake fished from a toilet in Virginia, US, has been claimed by owners who say she went missing miles away.
James Hooper of Virginia Beach says he thought it was a prank when he spotted the snake in the toilet on Thursday, but then he saw the tongue moving.

Hooper says his roommate, Kenny Spruill, used a fishing pole with a noose to pull the snake out.
Animal Control Supervisor Rebecca Franklin says the pastel pied ball python's owners spotted photos on social media and claimed her on Friday.
