Lyrics Alone
« on: March 21, 2010, 11:48:28 pm »

Lyrics Alone (lyricsalone.com), is a new lyrics site that I just built in my spare time over the last week. It's blazingly fast, due to the lyrics pages being text-only static HTML (well, almost text-only), and anyone with an email address can post lyrics. Take a look, and tell me what you think. And add some lyrics.

I hope you don't mind foreign music.
Would you like it in the original language + Romanization + Translation?

Whatever you like, Pirate King Luffy. Thanks for posting. You've uncovered a bug in my registration mechanism, however. It asks for an "Email" address and password at the beginning of that, and sends a confirmation email. Then, when you click on the confirmation email, it asks for an optional "Name" and your password again. The "Email" is NOT saved, but the "Name" is saved, and used to identify all of your posts. You mistook, I think, the "Name" for the "Email" being requested again, so you typed it there. So my site was, for a short time, a spam magnet for you. I've changed your name for now to "Anonymous". If you'd like some other name to appear on your posts, ask, or register again (link on home page). If you do the latter, you'll have to tell me, because I don't reprocess all of a user's pages when they change their name, and I'm not sure I'm going to provide that service, it being potentially expensive. But I probably will add it as part of the coming feature that lists a user's posts (unless they're anonymous).

I'm going to move the "Name" field down below the buttons on the registration confirmation page, with some text clarifying its purpose. Hopefully, that will stop others from having the same confusion.

Or maybe you WANTED your email address on every page you post. Somehow, I doubt it, but if so, it's easy to restore.

Just change it to "PKL". I thought there was a bug that logged me off and allowed anybody to post anonymously.
Good thing that wasn't it. I've been working to get all the lyrics I've got out there for you and I want the recognition...
Not to be rude or anything. When my re-written version of Come Out Ye Black and Tans is finished I'll post it under
my nick-name's initials. MWD might put his stuff up if you ask him.

I have a question. When a song's composer or writer is unknown, Is there a category for that? This mostly seems to
apply to folk music, so I have a bunch of Origin Unknown Songs for ya but I don't know where you prefer them placed.
Your house, your rules. I'm just putting away the groceries. So where do you put your ketchup? Fridge or cupboard?

OK. I've changed your posting name to "PKL", and updated all the pages, so it appears.

I also changed the registration code to ask for the "Posting Name" in a second screen, after registration is complete, defaulting to "Anonymous". You can also change just your "Posting Name" on the registration screen, if you're logged in.

As to the Origin Unknown songs, there are a number of ways to label them. Not sure which would be best. I'll think about it. Here are some possibilities:

Origin Unknown
Artist Unknown
Anonymous
Traditional

If more people with different music tastes than me don't post some lyrics...
Bill's site will become an Otaku Magnet. Just letting you know...

I have posted the lyrics to 39 songs already out of 42 total.
The lack of other people posting needs to be remedied somehow...

BTW, Why did I post this? More importantly... Why do I have it to post in the first place...?

Good work, Bill. Those other sites are tedious.

Thanks, Junker. I continue to add features. Should have the list of songs posted by each user this weekend. Hoping that Amazon (and iTunes) will approve my users providing their own associate links for the songs they post, so they can make money from them, and so that I'll have a way to motivate more posters.

Very cool of you to do this. Seems like all the other lyric sites are trashy ad jungles.

I just joined under a new name, I'm sure it won't be too hard to figure out. Needs more Vikings, Satan and Obscenity.

Yes. I was following your posting last night, just before going to sleep, on my iPhone browser. Thank you!

You're very welcome! It gives me something to do during my down time.

I just uploaded the Lyrics to the first 4 Metallica albums; Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets and And Justice For All. These, in my opinion are 4 of the most exellent metal albums of all time but after that Metallica just started to stray from their awesome roots and suck big fat populist balls, so I will not be uploading lyrics to any other Metallica songs after these. This picture of James Hetfield explains it all:

Heh. Never been a Metallica fan. No accounting for taste.

I should get the user pages up tomorrow, which will turn the poster name on each page into a link to a page that will show all the lyrics posted by that person.

Planning an albums page for each artist, where people can post the contents of albums, as a list of songs whose lyrics are already up.

That is REALLY nice, Bill.  Song lyric sites are generally some of the worst pop-up / malware infested sites there are.  Porn pages are more respectful and responsible.  I hope you end up getting ALL the traffic away from those other sites.
