Rights activist Julian Heicklen flees US, takes refuge in Israel  :  http://www.examiner.com/article/rights-activist-julian-heicklen-flees-us-takes-refuge-israel

Quote
The Libertarian News Examiner has confirmed that longtime libertarian rights activist Julian Heicklen fled the United States on May 22 for Israel where he was granted political asylum and Israeli citizenship.

Responding to an inquiry from the Libertarian News Examiner, Heicklen said, “I decided to leave the US on January 1, 2012, when Obama signed the NDAA of 2012, which gave him the authority to arrest and detain indefinitely any person without charges or a trial.”

Quote
Since Heicklen is well known for his droll humor and sardonic turn of phrase some of his followers were unsure whether to take him seriously or not.

However, his original message went on to recount the numerous abuses he suffered at the hands of American authorities over the years for doing nothing more than peacefully distributing Fully Informed Jury Association pamphlets outside of courthouses around the country in accordance with what he saw as his Constitutional right to do so unmolested.

His chronicle of harassments, arrests, indictments, trials, and subjection to painful and unauthorized medical abuses which Heicklen described as "kidnapping" and “torture” lent credence to the seriousness of his announcement of self-imposed political exile.

I don't know the ins/outs of granting Official "political asylum". Just thought I'd update.

Neither she nor Kirsten have been active over at the FIJA forum since mid-May, about the time of Doug's life celebration in Alaska. I sent mail to both of them, asking Ilo if she's there and Kirsten if she's heard from Ilo lately.

I don't visit the FIJA forum nearly as often as I should, but I did look at it a few weeks ago. I need to ask Elias if he's heard from her.

Kirsten replied: "Ilo is still in Alaska, post-memorial celebration, packing some of Doug's things and so on."

Thank you, Bill. I am concerned for her because she worked so hard and hoped for so much. That can leave one in a vulnerable place. But she is strong and good... can't beat that combination. :)

Ilo replied by email. Confirmed that she's in Alaska taking care of Doug's stuff. Sounded in good spirits, as much as you can tell that from an email.
