Fwd: Flash- gun free schools -Friday
Dear MSSA Friends,
HB 558 is MSSA's bill to cure problems about mis-enforcement of guns
at schools rules. HB 558 is to clarify that kids may not be expelled
from school just because they forgot to take their hunting rifle our
of their car.
FYI, I'm in Helena with limited computer ability. See:
http://data.opi.mt.gov/bills/2011/billhtml/HB0558.htmHB 558 is scheduled for its public hearing before the House Education
Committee this Friday, 2/18. The House Education Committee meets at
3 PM in room 137 of the Capitol building.
If you can come to Helena, great. If not, be sure to send messages
to committee members. Here are the important points to cover.
HB 558 will INCREASE local control of schools. "Local control" will
be a HUGE issue with committee members. Currently local school
boards and administrators think their "hands are tied" by state and
federal laws, and that they are compelled to expel students, about
300 in Montana since 1996, because of guns in cars in school parking lots.
HB 558 will clarify that state law is consistent with federal law
that EXEMPTS guns secured in cars parked on school property from
mandatory expulsion. HB 558 will increase the discretion of local
school boards.
HB 558 does more. Read the bill. Be informed. Come to
Helena. Send messages to committee members by phone, Online message
form, or email.
Let's get on this, even if the notice is short. Let's quit ruining
Montana kids' lives when they've done nothing wrong.
Thanks,
Gary
