I spent my weekend at the local bi monthly gun show. The selection of rifles available was great. Unfortunately, inflation has hit the Battle Rifle market. The formerly 300 dollar "rifle" has gone up in price to 500 dollars. The only good deal to be had was milsurplus SKS's for 130.

I'm afraid the "window" for trading metals for weapons has closed...

I went to the show in Houston yesterday, and found a few AK variants for between 3-400FRNs, though most SKS rifles were over 200, with a few exceptions. I didn't see a single K31 at the show, too bad, as my Dad wants me to pick one up for him. If anyone between Houston, San Antonio, and back toward Little Rock knows a good store carrying them, please let me know.

The prices can vary WIDELY, so I make a pass before purchasing anything. Factory Ruger 10/22 mags were found at up to 20 bucks. I found one booth which had three of 'em, NIB, for 10 bux each. They'd been marked down, so these folks may have been merely reducing their load for the trip home... dunno, but I got 3 new mags.
Average was 13 to 16 bux each.

The .50 cal shooter's club was there with their toys. ooooooooooooooooooooooooh.
There was a hastily corrected placard next to one of the rifles: it had claimed 2.6 inches at 1000 yards, then "2.6 MOA"
The correction merely re-located the decimal. .26MOA, much better.
Sweet.

There were K-31's all over the place at this gunshow, the prices did vary wildly, one could be had for 150 and another for 200 at different tables.

There was not a 50 caliber BMG anywhere though. I looked and and wanted to take one for a test drive, they just weren't there though.....

Which gunshow? Since the weekend is up, I'm going to have to find one at a shop somewhere. I may even have to put it off a few weeks anyway, as
we'll be picking up the airplane tail kit at the end of the month. Gotta pay the balance when we pick up the stuff.

The gunshow used to be called "Land of Sky" now it is one of the ones that C&E puts on. They are based out of Viriginia, and they bought LOS 2 years ago.

Re: Gun Shows/Raleigh, NC gun show report
« Reply #51 on: August 12, 2006, 09:00:34 pm »

Just a note after visiting one of the four scheduled Dixie Gun & Knife Classic gun shows at the NC State Fairgrounds in Raleigh Sat. 6/12......

Got there at noon with inlaws and it was pretty much packed with folks buying and selling. Not a bad crowd for a show there four times a year. It used to be a twice a year show in Raleigh.  As I have heard on other boards, military surplus was getting scarce, and what was there was little and expensive.  Ammunitionstore folks from Ohio who are regulars weren't there...hmmmm...they are a big source of the surplus at the show. Also Classic Arms out of the Charlotte,NC area didn't have any surplus ammo of any kind to sell this show or the last....bigger hmmmmm....what I did find in the way of surplus was battle packs of guatemalan and cans of Radway Green .223 for 20-25cents/rd. and the favored south african .308 was $260/metal case full. The rest was privi partizan commercial but not cheap....the yugoslavian brass cased 8mm as gone and replaced with romanian 8mm steel corrosive at about $50/per can 380 or 440, i can't recall which.

I saw my first tins of the 7N1 7.62X54 sniper ammo for $100/tin 440 rds/ and Russian military 5.45X39 7N6 dated 1976 was $160 for 1080 rds. in a sealed tin.....ouch.....even 9mm ball was getting to $160/M and there wasn't much in the way of selection of other military calibers. Oh, yes- there were still some 50cal. cans of KA-headstamped Korean 30-06, 384rds./$70. There was a good deal of Mexican Aguila ammo of all kinds, if you were interested.  But like gasoline in an underground tank at your local convenience store, many of the same old boxes of some kinds of commercial hunting ammo had new higher-priced stickers on them at this show, seeming to reflect the cost of ammo increases across the board.

Firearms were  in abundance esp. handguns, which were popular and the recently discontinued Winchester 9422s, model 70s, etc. were selling well.  It is too bad many folks didn't stop to look at the book vendors' wares because there were some bargains to be had there....even bought Claire's latest book 'Think Free to Live Free.' Found a vendor from VA. selling several cases of relatively late date packed (june 06) GI MREs for $40 case, which was good price if you wished to stock up. Several vendors were selling AK parts kits and I mulled over that one before moving on since I didn't know much about them...but i will study up on that.

All in all, considering the free parking relatively close, the $7 gate charge and few if any hassles with authorities there that I could see, with several out of state vendors bringing down ammo, gi surplus and parts mixed with a few local FFL shops of some size, Classic Arms, Iron Brigade Armory and a class 3 dealer or two, it was not a bad show. But it is changing - I can't quite say how, but there is a change is ammunition and component availability for sure. Sorry to ramble on, but I just needed to say what impressed me the most on this show...will go back to the fall show in mid-Nov. 2006 and give another report, if y'all don't  mind. Rgds, Redclay 8/12

Albany, Oregon. September 23 + 24. Supposed to be 2nd biggest in the state. A good way to avoid ammo shipping costs (hope there's more than one dealer). I think the guys I bought my SKS for $125 will be there - cheapest around.

Pray for me.

I get a my annual bonus tomorrow (should be ~$1500), there's a big 3-day showfrom the 17th-19th, and my 35th B-day is on the 21st. I've been dreaming about an M1-A for a while now, and that bonus would JUST about cover the gun, and another case (or two) of baby food.

Of course, my current goal is to save up funds for to secure my very own 20+ acre gulch, and $1500 would be a signifigant addition to my 'get the hell out' fund.

Push for 15K saved by years end, or settle for a mere 13K and a shiney new battle rifle...dilemmas, dilemmas.... :BangHead:

Whatever you end up deciding, Phssthpok, be aware that the supply of South African 308 is basically dried up. The main importer (AIM Surplus) has run out, and there's no more coming into the country in the foreseeable future.

Down here where I live when we consider the price of a fine firearm some say, "Ain't nothing but money. That ain't no big price in cotton country.  All you got to do is get your heart right and get off of that hip."

Re: Gun Shows/Raleigh,NC update
« Reply #59 on: November 20, 2006, 06:22:40 am »

Went Saturday 11/18 to the local Raleigh,NC gun show, and as the above posters have related, the surplus ammunition supply is indeed getting thin. There were lots of firearms (one slightly used M1A going for $1500) and parts kits and accessories, but the surplus that was there was pricey.

A few battlepacks of SAfrican .308 that could be had were going for between $40/$45 pack. Sealed cases of USGI green tip.223 were $330/case 1000 rds. and M193 Federal 500 rds. sealed cases .223 were $150/case. There were small broken lots/boxes of 7.62X39 and for the first time in years saw no 30-06 for sale, including the once ubiquitous Korean in cans and bandoliers.  Handgun ammuntion in quantities was also pricey and from what i could tell all ammuntion was selling well at higher prices. Oh yes - there was a .50 cal. can of the dreaded Indian .308 for .25 cents/rd..

The only remaining surplus that could be had in case lot quantities is the remaining Warsaw pact steel cased corrosive in 7.62X54, Russian 7N6 5.45X38 in tins and Yugoslavian 8mm steel cased corrosive 8mm mauser ammuntion. Prices were up from the last show on these, but still affordable. A telling bit is that the Ammuntionstore/Star Air ammo importers who have come down from Ohio each show for the past several years have disappeared (nothing to sell?) and the Classic Arms folks out of Monroe, NC who usually have two large sale tables flanking each side of the show had one small set up of surplus rifles and no ammo at all. They used to sell lots of cases of all kinds of ammo -but no more.

Good luck on finding enough to feed your pet rifles - the Walmart ammo (for now) may well be one of the best alternatives for some of us. Rgds, Redclay 11/20
