Yet another gun show in Cedar Rapids.  I didn't have anything specific in mind so I mainly walked through and just enjoyed the scenery.  Reloading component prices all seemed reasonable.  Powder was available but not in huge quantities.  22lr was plentiful if you wanted to drop some serious coin.  20 a round seemed to be the average price.

One thing in particular caught my eye: Anderson stripped AR lower for $67.  I asked the guy if I read that right and he grinned.  I remember seeing these a few shows back for 80ish bucks a piece.  He said if I bought the lower then he would sell me the lower parts kit for $40.  Holy smokes sign me up.

A year ago I would have paid $170 for a stripped lower and the parts kit.  Yesterday I walked out of there $107 lighter.  Looks like I have another AR to build!  The owner also mentioned that if I bought ten he would offer the stripped lowers for $50 each.  So very tempting...

It sure does look like an excellent time to have friends like Knobster who can turn a basket of parts into a really nice rifle.

First gun show of the season will open here in Newcastle in March. Does not seem possible that time is almost upon us. Can't wait to see what we have this year. The show has actually outgrown our location, but there is no larger building available so we just live with it. Gets crowded sometimes, but the friendly atmosphere and meeting old friends from all over makes it well worth going.

Actually quite easy to put these together.  Plenty of well-made youtube vids that show close-ups, neat tricks, etc.  I've built three of these already and it is rather addicting.

The hardest part is explaining to my SHW why I need another gun safe.

just get you one of these vacuum package machines. the ones they use to vacuum pack food stuffs, put the gun in the bag, vacuum up, dig hole in back yard, place gun in hole, cover hole.
done

you now have a spare gun, ready to go, all safe and sound.

no need for a gun safe, and it is out of sight, out of mind.

all a gun safe does is tell the JBT's where your guns are, and they will get in to it, and take them.
but if they do not know where you have buried them, then they can not get to them.

Very sound advice , though I'd put it all in a suitable size PVC tube.

I'll agree with the suggestions above and suggest that when you bury the shrink wrapped and pvc tubed "machine" with it's necessary food stuffs you also attempt to keep the physical aspect vertical so that it doesn't "print" itself as what it actually is to a GPR unit. (Laid flat in a shallow hole would be giving the GPR unit its profile.)

Stacked vertically two boxes of food stuff, cleaning kit, two spare magazines and the machine itself would print as a vertical piece of pipe. Sooo ... plant same next to the exiting drain field and it May just escape detection.

Just thinkin' out loud over here ...

Yes and while I agree with you, how many small towns have this radar unit?

you could also lay down some steal mat, some chain link fence, just about anything metal, alum foil would work.
to cover up any profiles, hell, make the cover of alum foil 10ftx 10ftx in a 2 ft deep hole.
put inside a raised bed garden. put it under a dog house, a rabbit pen.

No small towns have a GPR.  The fed on the other hand does.  If they reach the point they want to do that at your property it will be three letter agencies doing the searching.

As long as the alphabet soup gang finds some weapons, they probably will not start looking underground for more.

unless you give them reason to look, said something stupid in front of them.
a lot depends on what was said and when, and by whom.

OK back to Gun shows

My first AR build (the lower part) took me over an hour but that included the ten minutes I spent on the floor looking for a spring that got away from me!

Gun show in Cedar Rapids, IA next weekend.

I missed the last few due to other stuff going on but I plan to hit this one.  I'm on the hunt for a stock to fit the K98 Mauser I rescued from some bubba who decided it would be cool to destroy a piece of history.
