Record breaking temperatures are supposed to hit...with a wind-chill of -30 degree expected, and in some areas, as low as -50 degrees. The town I'm in is suppose to get 19 inches of snow on top of what we already have make for a good 25 or 26 inches of snow, with ice underneath that, with wind speeds of 20 to 35 MPH. Me and grandma went to a local Meijer store yesterday....it was jam-packed. Ever check-out lane, including the self-checkout lanes, were open, and staffed, (there are about 20 checkout lanes total) and had lines of at least 10 people, for the entire 2 hours my grandma and I were there trying to pick up a few last-minute things. There also about another 200 or 300 people in the store still shopping. And from what I've heard and seen EVERY grocery and hardware store was just as crowded yesterday and possible will be even worse today.



EDIT**** On the bright side I doubt there'll be any crime-sprees/looting to worry about. After all unlike a hurricane most people won't evacuate...they'll bunker down in their homes. And it's fuckin' cold outside! So assuming me and grandma don't lose the central heating in our home, we'll be able to wait out the storm. I feel bad for those who won't be able too though.

Amazing... we have such conditions here more or less frequently and nobody panics. I went to the store Friday to get milk, and there were no more customers there than ever.  We never used to know about this "wind chill" stuff... the temperature was the temperature, and you didn't go out if you didn't have to when it was below zero.

It was 5 degrees outside this morning at 4AM, dropped to zero by 8, and is now back up to 2 degrees at about 9:30. Supposed to drop to -12 by this evening, then to -16 or so by morning.  The wind does make a difference, because the heat just gets sucked out much faster. I remember one morning a few years ago waking to -27. Now THAT was interesting. BRRR

Ya ML I am always amazed when I go to the store on Fridays, which is our normal resupply day, and there is a storm coming.   Folks go bonkers and buy a months worth of food.  For cryin out loud people!! we are gonna get 5 or 6 inches of snow and the roads will be cleared by tomorrow in the late morning.

You would think there was a glacier moving in.

Tomorrow, in my neck of the woods, the day will start out at 40 degrees and then plummet to zero. That's a big swing! Oh, plus a 20mph wind coming down from Canada. BRRRRR.

Yeah, it's been so cold that once when I put my car heater on after warming up, after a few minutes of full heat, the car blue temperature light came back on, meaning it was cold. Luckily I got home in just a few minutes afterward. No way was I going to stop and freeze.

None of those doo dads on my car. I don't even go out the door if the temp is below 10 degrees, usually don't bother below 20. If the car starts, I go and if it doesn't start sounding good, I shut it down and stay home. I DO realize I'm very fortunate to have that option, don't get me wrong.

Well to be fair, while it CAN get pretty cold here, and there's a lot of snow (What with Lake-effect snow by virtue of living near one of the Great Lakes) it's rarely this bad. Usually the most we get is a 6 inches, maybe 9 inches at the most, with temperatures of around 5 degrees. And the last couple of years, there hasn't been as much snow or cold during the winter as there was when I was younger, and from before I was born according to grandma. It (the local reaction to the weather) could be worse. My grandma spent a year in Oregon with her younger brother and my dad when my dad was around 15 years old, and they got about 3 or 4 inches of snow (mind you this is in a part of Oregon where even that much is rare) and there was a lot of "panicking" from the locals. At least most people here know that going out on the roads for now is a bad idea, and barring an emergency, should be avoided, and that they should stay indoors. It's just a bit of a shocker that it'll get this cold and "snowy".

True most likely those people would only need around a weeks forth of food, at the most. Though to be honest we're supposed to get a bit more than 5 or 6 inches of snow...

The thing is that there is no rational reason not to have a month's worth or much more on hand ALL the time, and at least a week's worth of perishable stuff. Powdered milk on hand in case the weather is bad that long, even. Alternatives to things one buys frequently, and deep storage of essential proteins, etc.

Those - like my own sister - who keep little or nothing on hand, and have to run to the store to get something for dinner... they're going to be in a world of hurt at some point. But you can't tell them that... they don't listen, and they don't believe it.

Also, sometimes something happens to the car while you're already out on the road.

I agree with having storage foods on "standby" in the house. Perishables are sometimes purchased once a week by some people anyway.

Well, no... close. A 2001 Saturn.    And "idiot lights" are for idiots, I presume.    I use the gas gauge, the speedometer (sort of), the tachometer, and once in a blue moon I use the trip meter. That's about it.  One "idiot light" has been telling me to get the oil changed for the last three years, so I have to assume it has passed from idiot to brain dead... just with the light on.

The car goes in for regular checkups by the shade tree mechanic in town, and I put gas in it faithfully every three months or so. That'll have to do.

Oh I agree. I'm just pointing out that the people who are rushing out to buy a month's worth of supplies just because of a snowstorm are a bit impulsive. It's much wiser to have that month's supply, or more, on hand all the time...so you don't have to rush out for a few last-minute purchases. Unfortunately some people won't accept that, or (like my grandma) claim it's too expensive.

Oh me... sometimes you just wonder. I worked in a small, independent grocery store long ago, when my babies were small. We had an elderly lady customer who always wanted the smallest size of everything. She insisted that they were "cheaper." Could not convince her otherwise.

Eventually, we got "unit price" information when we went to shelf tags instead of individually marking the product. I made a special effort to create a chart, showing in large type exactly the cost "PER" unit of several items she bought regularly... and the aggregate cost of the small sizes to match the amount in the larger bottle, can, whatever.

She studied that for a while, then looked at me angrily and said, "Why, you've been cheating me all this time!!"
