Woody’s near the end of the road. He’s old, his body and mind are failing. He’s been drunk way too much, and he still gets that way. He’s got this stupid idea that he’s won a million dollars in a magazine sweepstakes. Really, who among us hasn’t had a dreamy moment when that envelope arrived in the mail: “What if this were real?” Most of us are smart enough not to let the notion linger past taking the letter to a local Dodge deal and trying to use it as collateral on a new van with a waterbed in it. And most of us trust the Dodge dealer because he set us straight all those years ago when we asked him if babies really came from Chrysler like our dads said (answer, I learned, is complicated; they do and they don’t).

After pissing away a lifetime, Woody sees this magazine jackpot as his one shot at any sort of a legacy, of not simply being forgotten, of not letting people down. Either through failing mind or willful ignorance, he’s determined to trek from his home in Billings, Montana to claim the prize he thinks awaits him in Lincoln, Nebraska.

“This is a very important lesson. You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end - which you can never afford to lose - with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.” - ADM James Stockdale
