It appears to me that a lot of the draconian stuff we are seeing is based on the criminalization of poverty.  Not just extreme poverty, like being homeless, but any lifestyle not of the rich and famous variety.

Need to take in a boarder to pay the horrendous taxes?  Forbidden, and they send storm troopers to enforce it.

Want to grow food on your own land?  No way, they can't allow peasants who don't shop at supermarkets to sully their pristine upscale community.

How the hell did we get to this point?  In the 1940s and 50s my grandparents had a large house, and they rented some of the rooms to boarders.  I don't think they had to get any government permits or anything like that.

How the hell did we get to this point?

They incorporated 'towns,' and set up "homeowner's associations" and "elected" representatives, commissioners, city councils and all manner of like vermin. They wanted these councils and commissions to impose whatever it took to protect what they saw as their own property and value of it, to eliminate competition in business, and so forth. Of course it didn't take long before only the most wealthy and "connected" were protected from much of anything these elites wanted to do. And the price just keeps going up for them too.

When some people are given power over other people, against their will, tyranny is the inevitable result.
