"101 Things" is CONTRABAND!
« on: December 03, 2003, 06:16:46 am »

Hey folks.
I'm a soldier in the U.S. Army, and I've been serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom since March. While there are a million things I'm sure I could comment on as a soldier who TRULY loves freedom, I'll be brief...

Claire's book "101 Things..." is apparently contraband. (It qualifies as SUBVERSIVE LITERATURE!) I can't take it back to the States with me, according to the helpful Military Police that conduct customs inspections. So, apparently, Miss Wolfe's writing is as dangerous as unexploded ordinance, foreign dirt and porno. I can serve my country and "support and defend the Constitution of the United States..." But I can't read or own certain books. I'd hate to part with this book, as it is one of those rare books I continually reread. I would also hate to see it in the hands of some ignorant MP who would basically throw it away or arrest me for reading.

I have a question of opinion, though. How should I handle this? I have several ideas, but my current plan is to smuggle it into the Red Cross FREE BOOK pile for another soldier to learn from, then reorder at home. I share the knowledge AND Miss Wolfe will get another couple bucks from me.

I'm open for comments and suggestions.

Out Here.

Can you mail it to yourself or someone you can trust?

BVJ-

Cool idea about leaving it for another soldier to learn from.

I have an extra copy of 101 Things. If you have a stateside mailing address, are so inclined, and have a secure way of doing so, PM it to me and I'll send it out to you. Totally understandable if you don't want to give that information out to a stranger on the internet.

While I have a lot of trouble with what our military is usually used for, I'm grateful for the men and women who enlist in order to protect their country. Thanks for your service.

That Claire Wolfe is nothin' but trouble.  :D

Jebur - The same customs rule apply for mailing items, so I can't send it stateside unless I had a civilian contractor who I trusted that could mail it off-post. Unfortunately, I don't have that.

August - I think I'm going to go for the Red Cross book-bin idea. It'll stick out and hopefully remind a soldier what we're SUPPOSED to be fighting for. As far as the extra copy goes, I appreciate the offer, but I can't think of another writer who deserves a few more bucks from me more than Claire does. So I'll be putting in an order for another copy as well as "Don't Shoot the Bastards Yet!"

The book really gave me focus and renewed my spirit when I was at war. It's one of a handful of books that I can honestly say has changed my life. I was inches from reenlisting in the Army when I read the "101 Things," and it made me stop and realize: If I really want to work towards freedom, I'd better take off GWB's uniform and work smarter. So I have one year left before I become a civilian again... okay, 417 days to go, but who's counting?

I'm pretty sure that Claire said on her blog just a little while back that "101 Things..." is out of print. So you'll want Augustwest's copy if you can't find any way to smuggle yours back.

Wow, BlackVelvetJesus. Our own gummint won't let the book back into the U.S.???  Well, don't that beat all. I wonder what they find so subversive about it?

Several years ago, the prison warden in Florence, CO, refused to let Tim McVeigh receive a copy someone was trying to send him as a gift (presumably it would have been a bad influence on him.   ). But otherwise I've never heard of such a thing.

Ain't that another fine statement about the kind of "freedom" guys like you are supposed to be fighting for?

If anything I wrote encouraged you to make a decision to get out of Mr. Bush's uniform, BVJ, and if the book continues to inspire and hearten you, I'm pleased and proud.

Augustwest, you're a good heart for offering one of your own copies. But let me do it. I think I have an extra author's copy somewhere. Can't guarantee it's the latest, most updated printing, but I think I've got one to spare. Drop me a private message, BVJ, and I'll either send one to some stateside location now or hold the book for you until you get home. 400+ days. Whew. Keep up your spirits and keep safe.

BTW, Amazon.com might still list the book.  But it's a special order item & when they go to order it ... it won't be there. Communications between Amazon and small publishers are creaky. I'll ask Breakout/Loompanics to goose them about removing the listing ... or maybe an Amazon vendor will have a used copy to sell.

But let me do it.

I won't fightcha Claire.

All the better for me and my plans to sell it as a rare banned evil black book on Ebay.  ;)

'sides, getting a gift from the author has to beat getting one from the leader of some rare banned evil black criminal dog pack (the members of which I've taken to calling "Roaming" and "Nuisance")...

Unbelievable that a book published in the US, by an American author, could be somehow labeled as too "subversive" for you to take back to the US.  (which, I assume, is where you got it in the first place -- I don't think Claire is all that popular in Iraqi bookstores)

Actually, it isn't all that unbelievable.  The whole point of the nonsensical rules, waking you up at 0400 to take "the whiz quiz", "health and welfare inspections", registering your privately-owned vehicles and weapons, etc... is to drive home one simple fact --

The Bastards think they own you, and they have the paperwork to prove it!!

And that isn't going to change, no matter who is President at the time, or what country he wants to conquer, or how just the cause is.

I left the Army in '95, walking away from a promotion, a pay raise, more training, and the usual things that they dangle in front of you just as your initial hitch expires.  At the time, I wondered if I made the right decision.

I wondered about it for about 4 months, then the Michael New situation hit the fan.
http://www.mikenew.com   Never again for me...  and that's just one possible consequence of signing your life away.

P.S. The emphasis you mentioned on "subversive literature"  makes me wonder if we here in the States are missing out on something.  Is there anything by "Mohammed Akbar Clairwolfistan" that you would be bringing back if you could?

Better yet, is there any fedgov maintained list of 'subversive books' that the public can see?
It could be illuminating to know what sacres 'em. Also, it could improve next summer's 'reading list'.  ;)

Any semi-sane person, that's who.  I kept a day count starting at something over 1000 days left in the Navy. (I don't remember exactly, that was in the mid-eighties.)
And believe me, I was semi-sane.

I've passed this story to some others and one person challeged it as inconsistent with his experience.  Do you have any supporting evidence?  I know a newspaperman or two that might be interested in this.
