For the 98% of recorded history that occurred before 1911, this is the most definitive source.[/i]

I'm sure.. but an awful lot of stuff has happened since. :) And this would have to be a serious collector's item anyway - even if it could be found in a complete set.

I had a 1945 edition (very used) of the World Book when my sons were small. I would dearly love to have it back. sigh Can't even remember what I did with it... probably gave it to the Salvation Army. Hope someone enjoyed it.

Oh sure, a lot has happened. I think the gist of what some of the various curriculums are saying is that a lot of the encyclopedias have been revised to include a bunch of politically-correct/progressive b.s. :)

Well, that's been going on since the first "history" books were written, of course. The "history" is written by the victors, for the most part, and you really have to dig to find anything else. I remember some of the history taught when I was in primary school... and how much of it has been proven to be bogus since.

Trust, but verify. :)

Some of the homeschool curriculums recommend:

The complete 30,000 page 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica. The 1911 Britannica is generally acknowledged to have been the greatest encyclopedia ever written. Its depth of knowledge and the erudition of its text are remarkable. For the 98% of recorded history that occurred before 1911, this is the most definitive source.

While I don't dispute that, I am curious what they recommend for the 103 years of history that have happened SINCE 1911....

Reminds me of that Family Guy episode:

Lois:  Well, Chris, you're not gonna learn any history from this. This textbook is from 1948.  Chapter 3:  "Youth culture rebels with Big Band music."  [...]  "Israel, the brand-new country everyone's gonna love."  What the hell? Are the schools so underfunded  that they can't afford text books from this century?  Well, I am going to raise hell about this at the next PTA meeting.

Stewie:  Well, let me know if you need help. I can be very persuasive.  I gave the next speech after the Braveheart guy.

[obligatory cutaway]

William Wallace:  They can take our lives, but they can never take
our freedom!

Stewie (on horse):  And... and...  Let's not forget the tax they levied on properties
that are in abutment of church lands.  So, yeah, let's do it.

8th grade matriculation tests used to be as difficult as today's "masters" theses.  We are so dumbed down that we don't even realize how dumb we are.

Please don't include me in your "we." Sweeping generalizations are seldom useful.

Actually we don't include "you" in we, and we don't include anyone but "us" in "we."  The issue is that if you go back and read your exam materials you WILL find things you forgot.  Assuming you're the overly sentimental type (I didn't notice that) and thus prone to keeping mementos of "the old days."

I actually kept some papers from my high school days and noticed that my mindset didn't change that much.

Geez dude, maybe i'm gushing, but you saved AFRICA from Ebola AND you use calculus at work?!?!?!  You hiring?  Want to subcontract some of that work out my way?!

No joke.  I'd probably enjoy that line of work.

No, two issues here.  As easy as it is to do, sweeping generalizations of the "we" and "you" type are annoying as hell, and seldom persuasive.

Second, I was writing college level exams for my students in 1989, for students who could not read, spell, think analytically or even follow directions half the time.

I've read the 8th grade "tests" from the early 1800s, and just shook my head. Much of it would be utterly useless to most of the students, then or now. Those tests were a product of the government schooling, every bit as much as those today. I remember in the 1950s, "history" was a series of dates, places and who "won" the various battles - very little else. I don't remember any of it, and don't give a damn.

People need to be free to learn what they want to satisfy their own needs and talents. And if they don't want to learn anything except how to operate a "smart phone," well, such is life. Too bad to be them.

"School" has been screwed up for a very long time, and the 8th grade test actually proves it.

Much as I'd love to find something to pick on, your points here are 100% accurate.  Especially about history.  I only enjoyed history because I read it on my own, LONG before I got to schools.  As I said, there have been a few classes which benefitted me, and they were 'schedule fillers' in school.  Most everything else except math, science and language were crap... all the political science stuff I read even now is crap, was crap, will always be crap until the day it is taught as what it is... a branch of mental medical science known as psychological pathology... or something along those lines.

That's really what politics and politicized anything will always be.  Good ideas stand on their own, so do facts.  Only falsehoods need political clout.  As you state, for illiterate morons, however, political clout becomes necessary to pass off a good idea, since the illiterate morons require a 'strongman' figure (a government offiicial or figurehead) to tell them what to think and what to value, since they, themselves, are incapable of this action.

Again, this probably applies to NOT ONE here, in full, but then again, realize we're very few and very far between.

I am uplifted by the fact that it seems geeks the world over are getting it.  Not the full picture, but a big fraction of it.
