For the Children - really!

Excellent idea to increase the number of people who actually understand what liberty is and how to get there. Maybe more of us need to write such books...

Despots throughout history have recognized the importance of subjecting the youth to heavy doses of propaganda in order to facilitate their rule by manufacturing their support—adoration, even. Government education, even in the “land of the free,” accomplishes the same objective, inculcating its students with a pro-state perspective.

Sadly, most people in the liberty movement aren’t fighting this battle for the hearts and mind of the youth. Even worse, many don’t realize that a battle is underway at all. If we’re interested in liberty in the long term, it’s important that our educational efforts encompass not just adults, but their children as well.

As the father of two young children, I began looking a couple years ago for material that would help my children better understand the concepts I hold dear: individual liberty, non-aggression, free markets, property rights, etc. The results were shocking—because there were hardly any.

Sure, there were books about the U.S. Constitution or American history, but these were geared for older children, and they didn’t discuss the fundamental principles I wanted to expose my children to. So a friend and I set out to fill this profound void in the market by creating the Tuttle Twins series of books to do exactly that.

MamaLiberty,

Great Idea on TMM writing children's books. That is exactly what Elias is asking for in is mindwar thread.

When I was in high school, and the Powers didn't wish to let me graduate a year early, I ended up taking so called "schedule fillers."  One was a class called Humanities, and its successor Humanities 2.  Now before the super religious folks go insane with the term, yes, its called Humanities, and yes it was a story chronicling the "standing on the shoulders of giants" type idea, or rather, how one small invention can affect succeeding historical events and inventions and build up from there... from champagne bottles and Napoleon's army's food needs to modern sterilization and canning processes, from gun cotton to electric lights and modern plastics and photography.

Amazing stuff.  And yes, it was always up for being shot down because not enough students wanted to take it.  Probably one of the few classes that presented to my "fellows" of the age what it means to APPLY what you learn.  Probably one of the few classes I so thoroughly enjoyed that I read the books pretty damn fast.  Its nice having text books you are willing to read cover to cover before the year is really seriously underway.

Just saying.  Similar idea, and it presents how seemingly unrelated events, without a mastermind overlord government to dictate them, end up bringing about inspiration or materials to get something else done.  (This post is in answer to their announced book "I, Pencil" about free market ideas to kids.)

I used to eat up series like Connections

http://www.amazon.com/Connections-1-5--Disc-Set/dp/B000NJVY3U/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1421340458&sr=1-1&keywords=connections+burke

There were a couple like this that were just outstanding.

Thanks! I've spent some time the last few days trying to write one. It is incredibly difficult!!  The worst part is that I don't know much about children anymore. My youngest is now 46, and I have had little opportunity to be with my grandchildren from the start.

I don't know how they think or what they would respond to, most likely, let alone how to write at a level most modern children would understand. How would one choose the right words? Perhaps graphic novels with very short format and narrow topics would be better?

This is a much greater challenge than I anticipated.

How about a story aimed at teenaged girls that focuses on the dangers of social media? It could touch on cyber bullying, NSA and parental spying, and other negative aspects. All under the umbrella of self ownership and ZAP.

Don't know anything about teen age girls. sigh  I was one once, 55 years ago, but I think a few things have changed - even if I remembered much of it.

The most likely thing to do would be to team up with someone like Moonbeam and others who deal with children daily, and provide some writing and editing help. That I could do. :)

Yep, fantastic stuff, interestingly enough, they had a textbook to go with the VHS tapes (yeah, high school was a long time ago. :))  It wasn't a typical school textbook, more like "required reading" for colleges, instead.

Actually learned stuff in that class.  My kind of class.  Ethics 101 was like that too.  Then I got out into the "real world" and found out few others took Ethics 101.  Issue was, the lawyers and cops took it, but apparently they were still taking the evil side of the staged debates. :D  And now they aren't content with losing to the better argument.  They "SWAT you like a fly" instead.
