The boys and I used to shoot water pistols in the house. My mother in law was horrified and loudly condemned it...  so I bought each of us larger water guns.  Too bad nobody sold the really cool ones available just a few years later. Not sure what is being sold now... but I'm going to look. Dang, just wish I had someone to play water gun with now. sigh

I used to "hunt" my cats in the house with my water gun when I was a wee lad. With my brothers though.....Well....Being that we used either bb's or crabapples in that style of activity, let's just say that we couldn't do that in the house.

Some NERF guns - last time I tried one it was pump action but with magazine.  They shoot Nerf darts so no water but the darts tend to crawl away and hide. [L is 18-dart. mag 3 darts/sec auto, R is 3 darts/sec belt-fed - select fire (!) w/remov. tripod - not sure if you can link belts]

Yes, we did try a few non-water nerf guns, but they were not nearly as much fun and the darts did tend to vanish. (The cat helped in that, of course). The water guns were the best, and much appreciated by our Labrador Retriever especially. Just taking them out of the cupboard drove him into a frenzy. LOL

I remember a lot of hot summer days when we all collapsed in giggles (well, the dog didn't giggle, but you know what I mean) on the floor, too tired to do anything else for a while. What wonderful memories. :)

My six year old granddaughter has suddenly got very "inquisitive", bossy and demanding with the other kids.  I got sick of her getting up "to go to the toilet" (literally) every 10 minutes after she went to bed, doing things like hiding under her bed with a torch and playing with dolls at night, calling me all the time for the most trivial things and not going to sleep until (some nights) 10 o'clock.

I warned her last night "any trouble out of you and you will go straight to the naughty spot, and at night the naughty spot is outside" (it is usually just sitting on the mat in the hallway with nothing to play with).  She didn't listen so I made her sit outside on the porch for five  minutes.  When I went to get her she said "I hate it out here there are spiders everywhere, now wouldn't you feel bad if you came to get me and I was half eaten by a spider?".

Apparently she told her teacher "I have a mean nanna, she put me outside and got spiders to try and eat me but I fought them off, don't you think that is cruel and unusual punishment?"

Sounds like you need to have a serious conversation about OPSEC with her ASAP!!! A simple, silly story like that told to a teacher here in the States, could get CPS on you. You could lose the child to foster care and perhaps find yourself thrown in jail for neglect.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with what you did. The kid was in no danger and might have learned a lesson, but you gotta be careful in this day and age. A six year old telling a fib could potentially ruin the rest of your life. I had the OPSEC talk with my minions REAL early. I refresh that training quite often.

Oh, six year olds are so special. She seems headed for a law career if she's already using "cruel and unusual" arguments. :)

On the whole, I suspect that positive reinforcement, rather than a "naughty spot" response would be more productive. Only you know what those positive motivations would be, of course, but punishment is rarely effective in changing a child's mind to better behavior. In my experience (my husband was the punisher), it only gave them serious incentive to hide, or fight and lie.

The only "punishment" I employed, and that rarely, was to send the misbehaving child to bed without supper. Since food was the absolute priority for my sons, they wanted to avoid that at all costs. :) And even when I did impose that, a sincere apology usually got them a glass of milk and a sandwich later. But they knew better than to ask for cookies. LOL

And I very much agree that it is important to keep such stories from being told at "school." How the heck you can do that is beyond me, outside of not sending them there. sigh

Oh yes, the youngest daughter (6yo) decided that bedtime is playtime, jumping on her bed, keeping her sister awake that shares her room, creating general mayhem.

I asked, "aren't you tired?", "no" was her reply.

I walked downstairs, leaving her to glow in her perceived victory over dad.  I returned with a small pail of soapy water and a cloth.
"Sofie, come here I have something for you"
She bounced off of her bed and slowly approached.
I pointed to the baseboards in the hallway, "here, clean these with this, let me know when you are tired" and I walked away.

10 minutes later.  "Dad, I'm sleepy".

I took the cleaning provisions and said, "now, goodnight".

She went quietly and fell asleep shortly thereafter.

EwB - That's great! Love creative parenting! Goodness it's mostly exhausting being a parent because you have to stay mentally one step ahead of them!

I've tried getting her to do chores but if her heart is not in it, she only makes a mess.  She has a "tablet" (sort of a child's computer that is portable and needs charging every few hours) that my daughter gave her and I've tried taking that off her for a time, usually part of a day, but she just says "I don't care" and plays with something else.  The "naughty spot" idea works best, she hates being isolated with nothing to do, and she really hates spiders.

The biggest problem is Samantha "appealing to a higher authority" (as she puts it) and going to my husband and saying "Grandad, Nanna took my tablet away for nothing, can you get it back?" or going to her father (my son) and saying "I'm being picked on, can you help me?".

I don't know where she gets those phrases ("cruel and unusual punishment", "higher authority" etc.).  It's like she has been reading UN literature.
