Gender roles
« on: June 11, 2018, 07:44:05 am »

A generation ago this would have worried me, but now I just think it is really unimportant and really quite funny.  I realised when my own son and daughter were born and saw how they grew up to naturally lean towards the "traditional" gender roles that for anyone to try to force either of them to play the part of the opposite sex to what they were, would have been very damaging.  When they were first born I was very much into "gender neutrality" and went out of my way to avoid dressing them in pink or blue exclusively and tried to provide "boy toys" and "girl toys" for both of them, only to have them both gravitate to the clothes that they wanted to wear ("girl" coloured and styled clothes for my daughter and "boy" clothes for my son) and my daughter refusing to play with anything that wasn't a doll or a colouring book and my son only wanting "boy" things.

I soon realised that kids "are what they are" and you can't change that because you might have prejudices.  It will only alienate them.  My kids just happened to be very strongly into their physical gender roles.  So are my grandchildren.  When the following incident occurred I couldn't help thinking that if some particular politicians (won't name them) heard this they would be "screeching the house down".

There is a local charity thing in our area called the "Men's Shed" where they have basic tools and local tradesmen come in to teach young boys how to use them.  The school the kids go to takes groups of boys (only) regularly.  They rely on parents volunteering to drive the kids and sent home a notice saying that they wanted "fathers or grandfathers" to stay with the kids.  My husband has been going with our youngest grandchild, 6 year old Aidan, and Aidan loves it.

He was talking about it at the dinner table and nearly 9 year old Samantha heard and said "I think there should be a 'ladies' shed" for the girls, one that teaches girls how to change babies" diapers" (she picked up the  word "diaper" from watching youtube, and now talks about "the baby's crib", the "critters in the woods" and "the baby's diaper") - see what America has done?  The next day she and two friends were writing a letter to "be presented to the headmaster at school suggesting that he make a 'ladies' shed' where they could 'learn to change babies' diapers' so we can be the same as the boys".  I don't know whether they actually presented it or they lost interest.  But the irony struck me, a section of society in the world has been going out of its way to try and "neutralise" everything, but incidents like this prove that they will never succeed.

I never thought that the 'gender' confusion insanity would go very far, though it is worse now than I ever dreamed. But I think the actual number of people involved seriously is still small, and concentrated in the cities, of course. I have seen no sign of such confusion among the children here. Both boys and girls, along with large families, are involved in rational things such as farming, ranching, rodeo and many different clubs. Nobody tries to limit these to any "gender," but the boys and girls don't seem to worry about it one way or another.

If they are taught integrity, self ownership, and personal responsibility, they'll figure out the rest for themselves.

I found something online once that said that only 4% of the population polls with non-traditional sexuality. I'd guess that most of this is traditional plumbing-associated gender with homosexual or bisexual attraction. Non-traditional gender is tiny.

Not that I care about statistics. Do what you will with other consenting adults in the privacy of your own home, and I'm cool with it, as long as you don't ask me to pay a single penny for it, traditional or not. And, please, shut up about it. I don't want to know.
