Real ID in Wyoming
« on: June 07, 2015, 04:41:09 pm »

I am required to "renew" my DL by September this year. I've been reading about the new requirements, and the state website entry on it. Very confusing, and uncomfortable, but I didn't see anything they are demanding that is not already part of the "public record," so I wasn't worried.

Originally, it seemed I would need to gather all sorts of "official" documents to prove my birth, all name changes, and quite a few other things. Turns out I was wrong.

Got a letter from the state transportation office with a form to use to renew my DL by mail. The instructions that came with it are quite clear. The only documents they want are copies of two utility bills to "prove" my residence in WY and my address. Same application form I filled out four years ago, far as I can see. That, and $15. will do the job.

However, we can only use the mail renewal every other time. In four years, I'll have to go into the office here in town.

maybe, in four years it may change again.

the same here in IL, but they changed it to if you have not had a ticket, then you can renew by mail, each time.

Weird.  They require more paperwork from me as a "walk in" here in Wyoming than they ever did in my "socialist" state of prior locale.  Everything takes longer here.  Sure, they charged 200 bucks for a renewal on anything but a basic license, but at least you walked in, they snapped your uber awesome holographic face ID pic, and mailed you a new license from their top secret anti terrorist facility in China's super cheapo discount warehouse district.  Could also be that the local busy bodies here feel "important" doing this to youngins.  I'm sure if Achmed walked in with the right ID papers and said he'd use his new ID to drive down to texas to a cartoon contest about Muhammad and shoot it up... they'd give him a license without a second thought.  Its all about compliance, not actual safety or security.  Those two Hackmeds who tried shooting up that well armed expo a few months back certainly didn't have any papers out of order.  That alone should prove this papers please bullshit ain't stopping anyone.  In fact, the only thing that ever stopped Hadji from doing what he wanted to do was a bullet in some important location... nerve center or uber important hydraulic fluid leak.
