Summer finally arrived for real here. The 4th of July saw a high temp of 101!  Then, night before last we had a gully washer rain and some serious wind for a little while. Cooled it down some, but looking for a high of 91 today. We get the usual thunderclouds each evening, but I don't expect much more rain until fall. Wind, you bet. But the blessing is that, so far, there has been no hail. My garden looks a bit frazzled by the wind, but everything is growing nicely. Should have cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers in a week or so.  First frost expected mid to late September, so I'll keep my fingers crossed...

Yes, the humidity makes all the difference. :) Current temp here is 78 degrees, humidity 24% and dropping fast. We're under a fire watch for the next few days since dry thunderstorms with lightning are possible each afternoon and evening. Most of the wildfires we have here are lightning caused.

I went to MO once, years ago for a 4th of July weekend. I was used to the 100+ temps in the Calif. desert, but at 5 or 10% humidity. Thought I'd die there in the sticky soup they call "air."  And someone there tried to tell me it was a "dry year." Oh sure. LOL

And mi6a2lm, the hot pavement thing was a regular deal when I lived in the So. Cal. desert. I remember one day when I was walking the mile or so from home to work and really wishing I had a car! The air temp was about 110 degrees, and it had been hot like that for weeks. Suddenly, it rained hard for a minute or two and you could see the steam coming off the road in massive clouds. I ran to get under some cottonwood trees and waited for the steam bath to stop. Didn't take long.

We've had the stormiest summer in my recent memory here in Iowa.  Decent weather, storm hits, sticky weather, storm hits, etc.  Seems we're getting rain every 3 days.  Garden loves it.  My lawnmower doesn't!

Just 71 outside here this morning - now at 8AM, up from a "low" of 70. Expected high today 89, but may never reach that if it clouds up and rains. We had a little rain last night, but no wind, thank goodness. No rain was expected and I had all the windows open - including the car!!!  I'll go to town in another hour, before it gets too warm.  Hope the car seats dry off by then.

Humidity    47%
Wind Speed    E 3 mph
Barometer    30.04 in
Dewpoint    50°F (10°C)

Monsoon is here - free car washes!

"In the area of 16th Avenue and Saguaro Drive in Apache Junction, crews rescued one person stuck in a vehicle surrounded by deep water. A witness told ABC15 the water was around eight inches deep in the area.

No injuries were reported."

Depends on how fast it is moving and how much sand it is carrying. In the desert, 8 inches of fast moving water in a low place might sweep a person away. More can easily wash away a car. Fast moving water in the desert can be very dangerous, regardless of the depth. :) People who live there don't enter fast moving water like that. Strangers often must be rescued.

Got to love Cheyenne summers...

Just had a dumper, rain lightning and pebble sized hail. The water was running over the sidewalks on the street. A small river to be sure. Morons still driving through this water at full speed, even though it was over their front bumpers. Idiots!!

Very strange summer here, so far. We had a few weeks of 80s and even a few days in the 90s in July, but today's high was only 68. Good gentle rain off and on through the day. Some brisk wind at times too. I went to the Junior Rodeo at the fairgrounds this morning, and it's going to be a major job to get the superglue mud off of my boots tomorrow. I spent most of the day in my flannel house dress, and needed a light bed jacket when I went down to read about 4 PM. Had to take some strong medicine for pain, but when I put the lights out at 8PM.... I could not sleep!! No particular pain, but just couldn't sleep. Very, very strange.

59 degrees outside now at 10:30 PM... and the forecast is calling for more rain tomorrow with 71 the expected high. Shortest summer ever...

Short summer indeed Mama.  Yesterday the high around my parts was barely 75 degrees.  In August?!?  A few tomatoes are finally starting to turn red but these plants need heat!  I'm wondering if the corn fields will ever dry out in time for the harvest.

The average high for the next ten days in my parts will be a 'scorching' 79 degrees.  Global warming my derriere...

No tomatoes ripening here, and only a very few have formed at all. Two of the largest fruits developed blossom end rot - due to the cold and wet, I think - so I cut off the bad part and stewed them with some onions and peppers with a chicken breast. I never tried to use green tomatoes before, though my mother loved them, but these were not half bad. Maybe I won't give them all away this year. The snap beans are producing very little, many of them malformed. I may pull the plants this week if things don't improve. Should just forget the beans and plant some broccoli and cabbage. I have seeds for rutabaga and turnips too. They like the cool weather.  I'd rather eat snap beans... but sometimes you just have to go with what actually works. :(

Light to moderate rain the last few days, only frosted lightly once but it may get bad tonight. 30 degree low predicted, so we'll see. The garden is pretty much done, picked the last of the peppers yesterday. Still have a few cabbages and some onions out there. May take them in today, though the cabbages are very small yet. Some of the onions got very large! I like medium size best, but will just cut and dry these monsters. Plan to plant more next year, as they are very good tasting compared to the store bought. So far, I've eaten most of the tomatoes that have gotten red... can't call them really "ripe," and they have little flavor... but better than nothing.  I've got bags and bags of peppers frozen, so at least I'll have some good vitamins and stuff from them this winter.

Heh heh... already writing my garden plans for next year. :)
