Child logic

I guess there is some logic in this idea.

My granddaughter, 5 and a half year old Samantha was talking with her 7 year old brother and she said to him "why is it getting dark so quickly now? We used to be able to play outside for a long time", he said "because it is June the 23nd and that is the middle of winter".  Samantha said "it is November in America, they can play outside for as long as they want to".  Conner looked confused and so I interrupted and said "no, Samantha, it is also June in America".  She said, "but it IS November in America, Amy (one of her school friends) has a Grandma and Granddad in America and she said it is summer in America and summer is in December, so ...

I couldn't convince her otherwise so I thought I'd leave the explanation for another day.

Travel to other lands and climates would probably be a terrific way to address that. I know...

Collect some pictures from weather reports around the world. Choose those showing the date and, if possible, pictures of the countryside or cities to go along with them. Might help.

She's just a kid being a kid! ML had some good suggestions to help her along the way. Sometimes it may take awhile before they kind of "get it." [It being whatever.]

When I was about kindergarten age I didn't understand why my brother was older than me. We have the same birthday month, his day is at the end and I am at the beginning. Since mine was first, I thought I should be older!

When I was elementary age, I thought that the actors on TV were doing their shows live. That is, I didn't understand that most shows are recorded and aired later. My Mom and brother tried explaining how that actor could be doing X-Y-Z at the moment while the show was playing - but, I thought that was crazy. I also used to think that actors did all their own stunts -though I wondered why the hair always seemed to look different.

Even now in my old age logic still puts me on shaky ground. For example, I cannot wrap my head around the young men who wear their pants down between their knees and thighs, instead of pulled up to the waist.  [My] Logic would dictate that you're an idiot if you do that.  :laugh:
