Apple and Security
« on: October 20, 2015, 10:10:26 pm »

There's been a lot of talk lately about Apple, Security, and Privacy.

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/10/20/apple-speaks-out-against-cisa/

If you go to MacRumors website and scroll down for a bit, you'll see a big deal is being talked about.

http://www.macrumors.com/2015/10/20/apple-ios-device-encryption-ios-8/

Especially when you consider this partial quote:

but the company told the judge that being forced to comply with the Justice Department's request could tarnish its brand.

Now, I don't know how much of this is real or if it is all marketing BS or some such. It does sounds encouraging. I think only time will tell.

I've been pretty silent about this issue for a while now. I've recently came across this article about Snowden's opinion about the whole thing.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/mar/09/edward-snowden-fbi-san-bernardino-iphone-bullshit-nsa-apple

I'm with Snowden on calling out the FBI's Bullshit. What? They don't have hackers of their own? They and the others don't have people that are computer experts? If there's money for people to work for, they'd be able to hire. After all the movie WarGames is based on that idea.

No, something else is going on here. I would've thought the government would want to keep their hacking people's phones a secret. Although the smart people would've figured it out already.

The real question is "Why is the government openly declaring it wanting the people to have no secrets?"

My guess: They're testing to see if it's safe to turn up the fire under that particular pot of water yet.

Is it possibly a smoke screen to hide the fact that they already have "back door hacks" in the works?

Apple invokes the Founders, saying they would be appalled.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2016/03/15/apple-founders-would-appalled/81820804/

Personally I think Alexander Hamilton would be jumping for joy over this and hoping the government wins. Remember, Hamilton originally wanted a Royalty with Washington as King. He wanted Britian's patronage system for himself and his friends(if you can call it that).

It looks like the FBI is taking another tack in order to grab the info they want from the phone, maybe likely to also be used on any other phones as well. It only proves my argument that they have their own hackers to do this stuff, even if they had to source it outside, like in this case.

I've always thought that the owners of the computers and tablets are the ones responsible for their own security. Which is why I don't like it when a company gets to decide what's gets put on their products, even after their customers brought them themselves. Makes one wonder and go "Hmmm."

Well, here it is, the government has found a way to hack into the iPhone, and without Apple's help.

http://bigstory.ap.org/article/bed1c699575e4dedb694ccb5739a8750/justice-department-cracks-iphone-withdraws-legal-action

Of course, it sounds like they had outside help but someone somewhere would have hacked it anyway. No tech is truly 100% secure, the only thing that would matter is slowing the hackers down enough to either frustrate them enough to give up or slow down the determined ones.

In my opinion, one should seek special equipment or programs to wipe the phones after a short amount of attempts of pass codes entries or time if failed.

That phone did have a pass/fail wipe. One reason the febbs wanted a back door. The fun part is that one of their own (or a contractor) actually had access at first and changed the password! I still don't know why he couldn't have given it to the feds. We'll never know the whole story of this one, any more than all the others.

Want to know my secret? There isn't anything IN my cell phone. Nada. I've never made or received a call on it, and no pictures yet. I carry it for insurance and to call for help in an emergency. No encryption and no passwords.  It would drive them NUTS! LOL

I know what the iPhone has, it sounded like it had a pretty good security but someone was able to hack it hence why they dropped the lawsuit. When I spoke about getting something specifically for increased security, I meant for on top of what was built in. And even so, no system is ever 100% secure, except for what's between your ears, and they have ways for THAT.

As smart phones go, the iPhone's security is pretty good. The contents are encrypted, always, with the passphrase, which you can set to 6 digits, or to an arbitrary length string (with possibly a maximum). If the password has been entered since reboot, then the phone can be unlocked with a fingerprint, if you provided one. Otherwise, the passphrase is the ONLY way to decrypt it, even by Apple.

Of course, extracting such information from unwilling subjects is one of the state's specialties, as depicted by the classic XKCD titled "Security": https://xkcd.com/538/
