Stupid WalMart bashing
« on: January 18, 2016, 07:44:15 am »

So, now they can go back to buying the groceries offered at the liquor store. No idea what it takes to run a business, only that they are entitled to whatever they feeelz like.

Walmart Closes LA Store Over $15 Minimum Wage
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/01/17/poor-hurt-walmart-closes-la-stores-over-15-minimum-wage/

Immigrant Hispanic and Asian residents of central Los Angeles campaigned for years for a “big box” retailer to locate in their economically depressed neighborhood to compete against liquor stores that sold a limited number of food items at very high prices. In September 2013, Walmart finally opened a 33,000-square-foot grocery and drug store in the Chinatown area.

Crowds flocked to the store for lower food costs, substantially cheaper pharmaceuticals, and even ethnic offerings. But labor leaders immediately started protesting against the store for refusing to unionize, even though 100 Walmart employees refused to sign union cards.

During the November 2014 Black Friday protests in downtown Los Angeles led by the union-funded Movement Generation’s Justice and Ecology Project, thousands of protestors were bused in to protest against Walmart destroying downtown, even though the company only had the one store in Chinatown.

Hah, I'll bite.  My dad's business, yeah, he tried to get help from the unions when the local non union people in the market were largely druggies, drunk or incompetent (its a plague in construction in EVERY market, it just is, those of you in construction or any of the heavy construction related fields can easily verify I'm telling the truth.)  (Ours was air conditioning, plumbing and gas fitting, I have none of the licenses, but I bet I can keep my own with the journeymen and masters any day, and probably outdo them, dad offered a 7 year warranty on workmanship!!  It was claimed twice in more than a decade of work by him, with my help and occasionally my mom when she had time off and I didn't.  This was in a busy growing market a hundred miles south of DC... busy... very busy.  He always had to micromanage his other employees to make sure the work was up to his standards.  I still think we should have charged far more after our name got out.  Seriously, the hardware failed before any of our work ever did.  We were THAT good.)

Anyways, those union boys?  They moved in and started making and demanding changes, and after dad tried bidding several jobs using ONLY union labor (they demand you only use their guys) and failed to outbid a single other contractor, he called it quits and refused to accept the union boys.  This is America, people here shop by cheap, not by good.  Even if all those union guys were top grade workers, the consumers of America want chinese pricing.  Quality will never float except when selling to big businesses and super rich.  It is the way it is.

You can always pay far more than something is worth as well... like groceries in a liquor store, or cheese head employees at $15. an hour.

Not surprised, the reason people can't have nice stuff is because they aren't willing to work for the money to buy it, nor are they willing to pay the money to actually own it.  Like people that used to be so down on the prices armorers charged in SCA when I was playing there back in the day...  The guy has a rare skill, he only has so much time in a month and he has how many mouths to feed?  What do you want to earn in a month?  Have you the skills to justify that?  If you do not-time to start leveling them up and do the school grind.

The usual catch 22 that people refuse to see- especially in themselves.  A crappy job now can help finance the opportunities for a good one later...  I do not believe they think in those terms anymore.

Critical thinking, delayed gratification, forward planning, etc are all foreign concepts to most people these days.  My children are finally understanding that if they want something better than the cheap $5 whatever then more work and more saving is needed.

Unfortunately, it's even worse than that. The government "schools" and herds of "social workers" have convinced so many that the world, "the rich," SOMEBODY else owes them a living, and even more. The entitlement mentality, and the utter lack of personal responsibility, is the nightmare.

Minimum wage should be tied to the consumer price index with COLAs given annually just like Social Security and military retirement.

But first, the problems with the consumer price index should be fixed. Instead of using average prices of things that all people use, they gauge by hotel costs and transportation (air travel ) and other BS. I haven't been in a hotel or an airplane in years.

Well....You're halfway there. It doesn't need to be fixed, it needs to be scrapped. Done away with. Finished. Minimum wage AND social security, are mechanisms used by TPTB to manipulate inflation and control the masses.

There is no rational way to dictate any "minimum wage." People must be free to trade... value for value in a free market.

If there must be a law to prevent exploitation and to prevent "Excessive income Gaps"  then address the problem directly.  The same rules can address the bonuses paid to executives when a company is failing as well.

Write and pass a law that says that the company may not pay the CEO more than x multiple of the lowest wage earner.

The company then has to find the sweet spot between the CEO wage and the wages they can pay to break even.  A simple law, simple to enforce and the politicians are not picking a random number, the market is the regulating mechanism.

the market is the regulating mechanism.

No "law" required for that. :) And in fact, every attempt to make "laws" about such things (most things) only distorts the market.

Yep. The unregulated free market is the only proper way to regulate any economic activity. If we need government for anything at all, it is only to provide restitution for bodily harm, theft, and fraud.

How would any government do that without the power to compel - to use force, to have authority to set up laws, courts, the whole thing? Individuals can certainly protect themselves from most such harm, and there are non-government ways to deal with those who will not cooperate.

Look at the first sentence. "If there must be a law"  (to make sheep happy).....
