Missoula, Montana
« on: February 04, 2016, 03:13:46 pm »

So we're finally moving to Montana. Our motivation is so I can attend the University of Montana for Restoration Ecology. Here is my list of pros and cons, and I'd like to see what other info can be provided from those that live in the area.

Cons:
It's cold in the winter. The wildlife is potentially dangerous. There is a football stadium in town.

Pros:
It is mild in the summer. My Grandma can make the same money there as here in Ohio. Missoula has buses that are sponsored by local businesses and do not charge fees to passengers. The entire university campus is traversible by bicycle or on foot (not so at OSU). There are 26 miles of hiking trails inside Missoula city limits. The city is sandwiched between two major parks and is near a ski resort. You can have chickens in town. There is good hunting and fishing nearby. There is a coffee shop in town near campus.

I have good friends who live there and in the area. It has been long known that Missoula is a typical university town, run by liberal/collectivists. Oh, and lots of greenies. If you don't mind that, you may do well. The winters are brutal, and the cost of living is high, but otherwise it's a beautiful place, I hear. Good luck.

Sounds like I'll do pretty well then. I'm a known Socialist, and my field of study is all about repairing damages to the environment caused by humans.

The ex-wife and I lived there way back in the 70's.
We lived in a garage we converted to a two room "cabin" in exchange for staying there over the winter.
Less than a year but we both really did enjoy the town more or less.
I have been back in the past five years and it has grown so much that I was no longer comfortable except in the "old town downtown" area.

If you really do not mind Cold Winters then you may just like the town of Missoula. It may just be a "City" by now.

Missoula, BTW, means The Place of the Skulls in the local native dialect.
It seems that back in the day (early 1800s) several tribal Nations would gather there for trading and horse racing. (There were no trees south of the river until the 1900s)
Several of the tribes were otherwise mortal enemies and would ambush each other in the Clark Fork River valley east of Jumbo Mountain. (With the big M)
There were said to be numerous skulls lying out upon the smaller meadows as the main trail passed through them to get to Missoula.
The area south of the river (Clark Fork) was flat and treeless covered with dense grasses and the tribes would camp in tribal groups and use the large open Bitterroot Valley as a race track and fancy dress parade grounds. There are were some very interesting photos up in the UM Library. (They may still be up there. And in the Admin Building.)

Montana is a great State and I loved living in the NorthWest (Montana and Idaho) for several years but I have grown allergic to Winter.

All the best in your move.

I found the stores near the University...

This one west of campus looks good for my health food:
http://www.thebuttercupmarket.com/

North of campus across a footbridge is Albertson's.

There is also a wal-mart, but we generally abstain from going there except for earthworms for my turtle.

Well, the cold forced a stalwart like Elmer Keith to move to Idaho to avoid the cold…

That used to puzzle me too...

Yeah they're at the same lattitude but Idaho gets some moderating comparatively warm Pacific wind in Winter.

Another thing—A young man who is still single and has his heart set on a Black Woman won't find very many in Montana…

I'm not young. I have no intention of getting married and anyway, I'm not moving to Montana either…

Just saying.

The field I'm going into will likely cause me to travel to warmer climates to get a job. Not planning to stay in Montana a long time, just 4-6 years.

You're going to find the winters much easier in Missoula than Ohio, At least we have coming here from SE MI in 97.
The wife back there hated winter and rarely ventured outside, Here though she'll get out and play and do chores without  complaining about the cold....
Something you might put on your list is tubing the Black Foot River during a hot sunny day in Aug.

Thanks for your input. I can't swim though, so that's probably not a good idea. But I look forward to easier winters.
