one step closer
« on: March 10, 2016, 12:45:19 pm »

Well, I am now one step closer to having my gulch.

Got the land.  YEAAAAAAAA

it is just raw land now, but it is mine.

more than 30 miles from the nearest city, as the crow flies.
so most would not even see it, let alone find it.
hehehe yea baby, now the fun begins.

Good luck, my friend. That's far, far too close to a city for me. But I do hope you are not going to be alone out there.  You got to sleep and a few other things without a rifle in your hand...

Illness and injury can happen to any of us. And, as someone who lives alone, I'm having to face that seriously as I get older. Your choice, of course. Just don't forget to think about it.

Thanks Mama, but I am more worry about shit being in the city than if and when I move out.
But you are right in that these are things I need to plan on.
but so far, I have not found a lady that would like to live like I want to.
so this will not stop me from going after my dreams, but it would be nice to have a female partner with me.

Female? Sure, if she can shoot and hold her own in the hard times. "Ladies" are a luxury item, my friend. Find some good people to join you, either sex. Then you can go to the bathroom knowing that someone is watching while you can't.

Nobody knows when this deal is going down.... :(

Dang... got in a hurry and forgot two little words.  ....someone is watching out for you. Watching your back, etc. I can't imagine anyone actually wanting to watch you pee. LOL

Come to think of it, I had to watch when my sons were little... until they got over the idea that they had a fire hose. LOL

  We had to put cheerios in the toilet so my son would have something to aim at.  Otherwise it was great fun for him to spray... everywhere.

Back to the thread: awesome news Julio!  First major hurdle.  Now the real work begins.  First step is to build your gun range.

Congrats Dawg  Well Done.

I am so jealous. (This poverty stuff is not for the squeamish.)

A water well IS at the top of anyone's list But may I offer a few ideas of my own?

IF, as you say, not many would see it ... what about a locking gate so that the wandering local youth with friends looking for a "safe place to drink and shoot tincans" (for just one example) won't accidentally stumble upon your gulch? ("Hey look an abandoned shack ...I wonder what's in it?")
How about buying a used travel trailer as a first domicile which would allow comfortable living while in the process of building the gulch proper? Not reccommended for permanent usage in the winter unless additional insulation (hay straw bales stacked around it?) is available.
A used shipping container as temporary "safe storage" and possible first barn/buried retreat?

I do not own land myself but do own my own mobile home, currently located in a rural trailer park outside of a small rural town. Not a perfect situation but comfortable for now. Largest town over 20 K is 65 miles away, still not far enough but doable so far.

I know that many here will boo and hiss at this one But what about a short "Howdy Do?" with the local Sheriff so that he is aware of who the owner actually is and that you are Not the lead element of some tear wrist group moving into the County he is responsible for. This will also give you a good chance to evaluate the man and his "political" leanings. If they are totally statist then you are at minimum warned ahead of time.
If he is not, most western states rural Sheriff's are not statist, IMHO, or not completely then that also is a good info byte. Some of them are very "Good Ol' Boy" oriented which is very similar to statist in my opinion. Still good to know ahead of time. No?

Here again my humble opinion, most country folks are happy to not have any Outside government in their lives if at all possible. The Sheriffs from these areas are of the same cloth.

Just random thoughts ... take or leave what you will.
:twocents:
Again Congrats on the land purchase.

Congrats Dog!

Along the lines of what DaGooch says. I would look to meeting the deputies in the area, as the Sheriff (IIRC)  is nothing more than a blow hard politician. Might have changed a bit since I left though. I will agree with the shipping container and the No Trespassing signs.

Well, I have meet the Sheriff and some of his deputies, at the gun store, Powder River Armory, seam like good people for the most part, not like the Casper PD at all.

I am looking at ISO containers for storage, just not many here.

as for people walking in and wanting to do things here, not likely to happen. unless they are wanting to walk over 30 miles in open country to get here, and that is as the crow flies.

fences are on the list, but later. not many people out here by me, the nearest one I have meet already, nice people, they told me about some of the people here, who are the trouble makers and all, but it will be awhile before I am there for any length of time.

travel trailer will work, but I do not have one, and the use ones are not cheap here.

Hey Gooch, if you ever want to leave Texas, send me a PM. land out here is not that bad, price wise.
on the plus side, there are more of us here, than you think hehe.

Check craigslist. Oftentimes, you can find a nice older camper that is still in really nice shape for pretty cheap. Well....around here you can. YMMV.

You Might be able to get someone to buy and transport one for you from the "friends base" you had in your last address? Maybe? Just a thought ...  :dontknow:

"Hey Gooch, if you ever want to leave Texas, send me a PM. land out here is not that bad, price wise. on the plus side, there are more of us here, than you think hehe. "

Me? Leave Texas? shudder When you can show me the winters in Wyoming are as warm as where I live in Texas Then I'll consider the move. My rule of thumb is If the white stuff falls in the winter, it's too far north.

If you look at an old old map of Wyoming that shows the winter camps of the local tribes that is where I would want to live. (Hint = most of the large cities are in those places.)

Thanks for the offer though.
