Francis Poretto: The Realm of Essences Series
« on: July 11, 2016, 08:11:15 pm »

I read into the wee hours of the morning last weekend, the first three books in Francis Poretto's "Realm of Essences" series. Will start the fourth tonight. Kindle editions at $3 apiece. The link below is to the page for book 4, which contains links to the first three.

Poretto posits "The Realm", inhabited by a group of disincarnate "brothers". One of them creates a universe, in which humans appear, with their own souls, something that the creator doesn't understand at all. The brothers grow very fond of the creation. One of them incarnates there and brings evil. Another goes to find and extinguish the evil one. They create yet another, a woman, in modern times. She is trained by an exceptional, fully-human hero. The three incarnations, though human in appearance and mostly human in makeup, always rise from the dead. The fully-human hero does not.

Most of the story takes place on Earth, in upstate New York. Lots of enlightened Catholic faith, but not enough to turn me off. A Constitutionalist presidential candidate in books 3 and 4, and some rhetoric in his speeches.

Lots of martial arts. Guffaws. Tears. Wonder. Recommended.
