An interesting weekend at the Funny Farm.  Friday afternoon I noticed lots of activity around the beehive.  Seemed to be a ton of bees flying about.  I told my son about it and he came outside.  He was immediately concerned - "they are swarming!"  I don't speak bee lingo so he explained - when the hive gets too big the old queen leaves with half the hive to start a new one.  Basically splitting into two hives.  The reason for his concern is that this will set back the old hive by at least a month while the new queen hatches, matures, mates, lays eggs.  So the expected late summer honey harvest will be less than he had hoped.

It is possible to catch the swarm once they land on a tree/bush/log where they linger for a day or two until a new location is found.  Basically put a hive box underneath them and knock the branch enough to plop the mass of bees into it.  Unfortunately they landed on a branch 30 feet in the air.  No way was I going to risk life and limb of me or my son to catch them.

He and my wife then suited up to check on the hive.  Apparently multiple queen cells are created before the bees swarm and it is recommended that you destroy all but 1 or 2 of the cells.  Before they could finish the task a bee got inside my sons suit.  He did what was necessary:  left the area so he could remove his veil and get the bee out.  Unfortunately about a dozen bees followed and he got 9-10 stings on his face.  My wife and I got him into the house finally and proceeded to remove the stingers, get ice on the areas, get some Benadryl, and basically calm him down.  He was in a lot of pain and crying; my wife was crying as she couldn't take the pain away quickly enough, just a not-so-fun time.

Once all the hub-bub died down my wife and I suited up and finished the tasks at the hive.  Then I had a good talk with my son about life.  Things happen that you don't expect, you will get stung from time to time, the real test is how one responds to such things.  I am happy to report that he has ordered a better bee suit (with a veil that zips into place), has determined the things he can do better next time, is studying how to reduce the chances of swarming and the list goes on.  He is disappointed that his planned honey harvest will be less than hoped for but has picked himself up and is moving forward.

He's about six weeks shy of his 14th birthday and is light years ahead of where I was at his age...

when this happens with the bees, set a hive body out with some lemon grass oil inside, and they will move it to it.

My son has been doing some research on how to attract new swarms.  I'll see if he knows about lemon grass oil.

also, by getting stung now, will help in keeping him from becoming allergic later

Yes indeed!  He informed me that once you are stung 7 times, you are immune to the poison.  Stings still hurt like crazy but no allergic reactions.  He's set now!

I've been stung once.  My wife three times.  Life on the farm...

knobster,

I have found that a drawing salve called "Prid" is very helpful in soothing stings and bites. Also of course, the classic "drawing salve" is a mud daubers mud home. Pure clean mud that if you apply when wet, as it dries, it will draw out impurities. A sign of "good luck" to have them outside your front door. Unlike other wasps, mud daubers are not aggressive. Still, a small can of "Prid" is a wonderful salve for all kinds of stuff. Walmart and others carry it.

Your son sounds like a wonderful young man. Congratulations to you and Mrs knobster.

Not necessarily true.  I suffered an allergic reaction the very first time I was stung by a honey bee, around age 5 or so, and every time since (4 or 5 times).  Sometimes, you're just allergic.

I've been stung by different types of wasps (a couple of blacks, a yellow jacket, and several reds) several times throughout my life, but only developed an allergic reaction in the past couple of years.

Thanks much Tahn!  I'll add this to the medicine cabinet.  My wife and I are working hard to raise our children as best we can.  Give them a fighting chance in this crazy world.

For Dad's Day my wife got me a greenhouse kit.  A small 6X6 footprint with plastic siding, pvc pipes for the structure so not a permanent solution if one wants to extend the growing season.  A good starter for venturing into the greenhouse world in my opinion.  Our plan is to set it up early fall timeframe and see if we can grow peas, lettuce, carrots and a few other items well into November.  We have one of those remote temp gauges that sends a signal to an indoor receiver so it will be neat to see what the temp is inside the greenhouse compared to the outside temp.  May have to shuttle plants indoors on really cold nights but will be an interesting experiment.

Congratulations on a greenhouse. Pretty neat.

I just read that spidermites can be a factor in a greenhouse because of no wind but a fan can help a lot. Don't know personally because I am NOT a gardener but maybe something to be aware of.

I've read that air circulation helps for many things in a greenhouse.  Still plenty to read and research...  I plan to set it up in September and start doing.  Another semester of 'trial and error' coming right up!

After a very busy week at 4-H (kids were heavily involved; showed 6 chickens in total) they are now talking about what to show next year.  Of course, the current flock of chickens couldn't possibly be used!  So it looks like a new project this fall/winter will be turning the old garden shed on the edge of our property into a chicken coop.  They are researching different breeds of chickens and really enjoy the Bantam's (smaller birds) so we'll most likely go that route.

We helped some friends with chores this past weekend and my 12-yr old daughter was in charge of milking the goat.  She absolutely fell in love with the animal.  Now my wife and two girls are asking if we can get a couple goats...

Chapter 3 of the Funny Farm Adventures coming soon!

knobster,

  I have often thought that the triad for sustainable living as it relates to "livestock" is;

Bees   - Honey and wax
Goats - Dairy and meat
Chickens- Eggs and meat.

Sounds like you are well on your way towards having all three.  Congrats!

Thanks Tahn!  Yes, goats seem to fit the bill the most for our place.  3 acres is not nearly big enough to support even a single cow without the influx of much hay.  I'll be researching and working on goat-related projects this fall I'm sure.
