"Co-sleeping"
« on: February 13, 2017, 04:46:40 am »

Eek, I don't know what to make of this.  My own kids used to come into our bed for years, up until they were teenagers.  When my daughter was first born nearly 34 years ago, I was advised by "childcare experts" that having her sleep in our bed was the best thing.  I had her cradle next to the bed but as I was breast feeding her I mostly used to go to sleep beside her.

My grandchildren sleep in our bed all the time now, even though I put them in their own beds, I invariably wake up in the morning to find at least one of them asleep beside us.  The only problem might be if they wet the bed but that hasn't happened yet.  I don't mind the 8 year old or the 5 year old but Samantha who is 7 is terrible, she flings her arms around while she is sleeping bashing me on the head, and kicks and carries on while she is asleep.  Last night (or early this morning) I woke to the sound of her saying "Nanna, I think the window is open and I'm getting cold", I was already perched on the edge of the bed so I got up to close the window and found that she had taken over the whole space and there was not any room left for me.

This is the first that I have read that sleeping with your kids is a bad thing to do.  What has been the experience of anyone else?

A mother who allowed her children to sleep in her bed with her has had them taken away by a judge.
The two boys, who are aged under four, have been put up for adoption, after social workers raised concerns after finding bruises on their bodies.
Judge Peter Greene said the mother, who has not been named, failed to act on advice given against “co-sleeping” and outlined his verdict at a private hearing in Cambridgeshire.

Nope.  No kids were ever allowed to sleep in our bed unless a really bad storm scared them silly.  We've heard of so many parents allowing 'co-sleep' and they are now trying to break the habit since the kids are older.  Kids unable to fall asleep in their own bed, parents wishing for a little privacy, etc.

Depends on the culture, the kids and the circumstances. I kept my babies in little beds in our room when I was nursing them, but they went to their cribs in the nursery when they no longer needed to be fed every few hours during the night. I was lucky that the first one slept through early, but struggled with the second one and he stayed at my bedside far longer. They both turned out fine.

But keeping them in the bed with me? Good heavens, no. I'd have rolled over and squashed them flat. :) I kept an extra blanket on a chair nearby. Sometimes I wrapped myself and the baby in it while I rocked and nursed them in the old rocking chair. And sometimes I had to use that blanket when my husband hogged all the other bedding. Who needs a kid in bed? Not me.

In some cultures, everyone sleeps in the same bed.. if they even have one. And others do not. Nobody has a right to say what's right or good for everyone, especially the governments.

We followed the suggestions of a book that was called, IIRC, "The Family Bed", and our kids slept in our bed, between us, when they were infants. They naturally moved to their own rooms when they got older.

Worked good. Allowed my wife to nurse without getting up, and she and baby to go right back to sleep, while I got up to pee, change a diaper, and also go back to sleep.

This^^^^^^

The minions were in our room until they were around 6 or 7 months. Not too much since them. Maybe once or twice. They know that I sleep naked, so that keeps them away pretty well.
