Is the use of technology inevitable?
« on: June 25, 2017, 11:16:22 am »

I don't think so. Some people, like me, will always choose to remain independent... making use of what technology works FOR me, under my control, rather than adopting things that control me.

In 10 Years, Your iPhone Won’t Be a Phone Anymore
Siri will be the conductor of a suite of devices, all tracking your interactions and anticipating your next moves
https://www.wsj.com/articles/in-10-years-your-iphone-wont-be-a-phone-anymore-1498395600

Sure, Apple AAPL 0.45% may still sell a glossy rectangle. (At that point, iPhones may also be thin and foldable, or roll up into scrolls like ancient papyri.) But the suite of apps and services that is today centered around the physical iPhone will have migrated to other, more convenient and equally capable devices—a “body area network” of computers, batteries and sensors residing on our wrists, in our ears, on our faces and who knows where else. We’ll find ourselves leaving the iPhone behind more and more often.

Trying to predict where technology will be in a decade may be a fool’s errand, but how often do we get to tie up so many emerging trends in a neat package?

Any chance there is text or transcripts for these? I can't hear well enough to understand them.

Started watching Black Mirror on Netflix last night.  It's a British series that delves into the question of how technology could potentially affect people.  It's themes tend toward the dystopian.  Just watched the first season which only consisted of 3 episodes.  Each stands alone for the most part.  They've all been done well so far.  Each has been an interesting take on what future tech could ultimately become in our world.

I've heard about an episode that deals with social media at a quite disturbing level so I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I love tech but I do understand how easy it is to misuse it against people.  The human animal can be a scary monster!

Pretty much, the people it is misused against are those who allow it.  Unless the "rulers" can somehow manage to do a forced brain implant on people, the victims have a good chance of avoiding the manipulation if they want to do so. That, of course, is the key. Those who have been brainwashed to accept the "authority" of the rulers, don't much question the technology used to keep them enslaved.

ML,  I mostly agree with you but there is a lot of tech being used against people without their consent. Thermal tracking, long range eavesdropping, etc.

Depends on what you include as "consent." Do they accept any "authority" of the non-voluntary government? Do any of them believe that such control by government is necessary and right - especially if it is used against OTHER people? Do they participate in electoral politics? Do they send their children to government schools? Do they insist on using the iPhones and all the other things that facilitate tracking and control? How many of them actually work FOR various levels of government? How many of them even care if they are tracked and manipulated?

There is a great deal to such "consent" that probably doesn't register that way to most folks.

I don't think so.

I sooo hope you're right. Remaining independent has became a struggle mostly because of technology. I aspire to cut the cords which rob me of my privacy & money, but also aware of the convenience modern technology offers me.

Maybe true off the grid technology will evolve to a level where we can enjoy a comfortable life without compromising our self-interests (low high-tech, if you will). I can't think of an OTG version of the internet, which is obviously a technology we are all consuming at this moment, but things like OTG appliances, cars, communication, food supply, power-sources, etc. may be so prevalent that most of the economy will be untraceable.

I know it sounds far fetched, but who knows? I am doing my part and developing a truly OTG car which will never ask me to stop at a gas station or visit the mechanic (but will be limited in other aspects). I will still rely on technology, but not on any 3rd party (and certainly won't provide anybody with any information) - which is the happy medium I am looking for.

Welcome! So glad to see you here.

The key to all this is individual choice, whether "off grid" or on some sort. Individual choice, the truly free market of ideas and products, and nothing dictated by any non-voluntary government. Technology isn't the problem, it is who controls it and why.

For many, the use of medical tech is inevitable.  Both my wife and youngest daughter have type-1 diabetes and are very dependent on advanced technology.  I've found ways to not depend on various aspects of it - syringes vs insulin pumps, low tech ways for refrigeration, etc but at the end of the day, both of them depend on the tech-heavy processes that produce the live-saving drug.
