Pain
« on: October 29, 2017, 10:41:38 am »

Has anyone that is in to Holistic medicine given any thought to using Medicinal Herbs, seeds and plants that are a good natural pain killer?

got a catalog from "Strictly Medicinal Seeds" with a lot of seeds and plants, both for cooking and medicine.

just wondering about if any one has done and looked into this here.

Dawg,

I am not knowledgeable but someone who is, recommended this book as THE book.

I have a "First Aid Kit" of essential oils but I have only used clovebud oil for toothache. Works!!

I do believe that identifying, gathering and using medicinal herbs will become more important and more illegal as things get worse.

I have been in serious to moderate pain for more than 50 years. I've studied a great deal of alternative and herbal medicine. So far, few things (especially anything "legal") help with anything but minor, temporary pain.  The clove oil for toothache is one.

The very best way to manage pain is to find and correct the problem that causes it. The tooth abscess or large cavity will be soothed temporarily by a number of herbal and physical measures, such as the cloves or an ice pack, but the actual problem will have to be solved eventually by a dentist.

Herbal preparations are terrific, and very effective, for most topical applications. Skin rashes and minor burns, other irritations respond wonderfully if you have the right product. Some of the best are aloe vera, jewel weed, and seeds that produce a gummy substance such as flax, chia and others.

A fair number of problems that cause pain are not responsive to much that is available, including serious opioid drugs. I tried all that for my pain years ago too, and it didn't help much - while causing other serious problems. There are things that could be done, such as acupuncture, water/swimming exercises, massage and other things that are either not available or too expensive for me to consider.

I have found that cannabis oil, taken orally in capsules, does help with muscle and joint pain temporarily. I have not experienced any "high" or euphoria using this either.  Unfortunately, it doesn't help much with the peripheral neuropathy, which is my greatest problem right now. But it does allow me to relax enough for other measures to help me sleep a little.

And, unfortunately, it is seriously "illegal."

Wish I had a better answer, but there it is. It makes a big difference what kind of pain you are talking about.

something that you posted about your field/first aid kit got me thinking about medicines, too many things made with chemicals, so I have been thinking about the medicinal herb garden for my place.

just wondering about what others have done, grown, used.

and yes a good book on how to make is good to have also.

Look for these: The Herbal Medicine Maker's Handbook  By James Green, Herbalist
Companion book: Field Guide to Medicinal Wild Plants  By Bradford Angier
Peterson Field Guides - Medicinal Plants and Herbs (lots of photos to make recognition easier)
Modern Encyclopedia of Herbs, By Joseph M. Kadams, N.D., Ph.D.

I could list a dozen more.

Oh, and everything is composed of chemicals. Just choose your chemicals carefully. :)

Wednesday I twisted, stretched, convoluted, then lifted too much.

POP!

I changed positions slightly then finished the task.  {Thinking, "What the heck was POP?")

Today the pain really disabled me.  Oh, Yesterday I wrestled a snow blower on uneven ground for an hour and a half, before scraping and shoveling to finish the job. I seriously earned this one.

But, DANG!, it hurts.  I found involuntary noises emitting from my mouth today when I would make some wrong move.

That got me to thinking about different styles of experiencing pain.

Two main camps come to my mind:

One emotes, exclaims, SHARES the pain with folks nearby.  For them, I think their pain is actually reduced by sharing it.

Mine denies the pain, breathes, pushes the mind somewhere else....lots of deep breaths are required if it is a big one. Extremely rare is the one that makes noises.

I was thinking pulled, stretched or somesuch to soft tissue, but today I recognize this one from long ago: broken rib.

Lucky me, I don't need that area a lot... not like a screaming toe, thumb, back or something that seems to be in the way of absolutely everything you do.  I just have to behave for 6 weeks or so. This too will pass.

SMS, If your interested I know a chiropractor in Hamilton who charges $20 a visit and doesn't require an x-ray, and gives the most gentle adjustment I've ever experienced.

Sure wish there was a chiropractor here that didn't think he deserved a BMW... The ONLY chiropractor here charged $90. a visit... ten years ago - the ONLY time I went to him. My neck was in agony and I had little choice. He wanted me to come back once a week... oh sure.  No idea what he charges now. I bought a new pillow and never needed to go back.

Hey Koot, that cannot be anyone other than Dr. Daniel Wolf, who helped me through my herniated disc  about 3 years ago and a few times since then.  He is a great one, along with being a total anomaly.

Instead of $85 and come twice a week for the rest of your life, it is twenty and "you will know when you need to come back. Give me a call".  Then gets you in the same day more often than not.

Not fancy equipment, no x-rays, no office staff, no frills, just a talented doctor making an honest living.

It is him indeed. I've been going to Dan (when needed) since moving to Montana in 97. Of the 8 chiropractors I've been to throughout my life he has been far and away the best. (and cheapest).
