got an old laptop I would like to put Linux on.

what would be a good one to use?

where would I get it?

Theoretically, Linux is free... download, turn it into a bootable disc and fire for effect.
That has never worked for me.

Lots of people like the Mint flavor of Debian. I use Ubuntu, booting from a USB stick I make from a download at https://www.ubuntu.com

Over 20 years using slackware here myself.
Although I certainly wouldn't recommend it to a new user these days.
