Facebook users in Europe are reporting that the company has started giving them the option to turn on its controversial facial recognition technology.
Jimmy Nsubuga, a journalist at Metro, is among several European Facebook users who have reporting getting notifications asking if they want to turn on face recognition technology.
(Update: Facebook has now told us that a notification seen by Nsubuga which suggested the face recognition setting was auto-enabled (“the setting is on”) was sent in error. “We did not intend for anyone in the EU to see this type of message, and we can confirm that this error did not result in face recognition being enabled without the person’s consent,” a spokesperson told us. They further confirmed the wording of the notification he received had previously been used, beginning in December, in notifications sent to users who already had its face recognition tech enabled — so likely to Facebook users outside the EU.)
Facebook has previously said an opt-in option would be pushed out to all European users, and also globally, as part of changes to its T&Cs and consent flow.

That's the problem, a lot of people do, and it is impossible not to have anything to do with it.  I had a rule that no one was to post pictures of my grandchildren on facebook, but my daughter in law did anyway.  I asked her to take then down and when she refused, I threatened her with no access to the kids "ever again".  She still didn't remove the pictures so I got my daughter to hack into her account and take down the pictures.

However, since then both she and my son have put up a lot more pictures of the kids (my son just because he has a huge alcohol problem and forgets things) and I can't keep up with it.

The kids now think I'm "mean" and they "hate" me because I won't let them have their own facebook accounts.

I've told my grand daughter that she can have (what she says she wants but her parents actually want them), a tattoo, drink alcohol, dye her hair, go on "social media" and have her ears pierced, all when she turns 18.  The gamble is that by then she won't want these things any more.  She is the only one who seems to have accepted that, the boys "fuss" about it, saying "but EVERYBODY goes to social media", Samantha is more concerned with the fact that other girls have their ears pierced and they are not 18.

Unfortunately, you can't control that for anyone but yourself.

Even though we homeschool our three kids, we still feel the pressures of social media.  Kids have zero desire to have a FB account but they do occasionally bring up the fact that some of their peers have gadgets and get to watch youtube videos, play games, etc etc.  We tell them they can have a phone when they pay for it (and the monthly bill) themselves.  They grumble a little, but then run outside into the fresh country air and have the dog chase them around.

I've never had a FB account, my wife did at one time but never posted pictures.  She mainly used it to keep track of friends.  After realizing how much time she spent on it most evenings she deleted her account and hasn't gone back.

Unfortunately TPTB have oodles of ways to keep track of our every move via the various digital paths we take.  Any goon watching this forum probably knows plenty about me.  Piecing together the websites I visit, the non-cash purchases I make, the microphone hidden in my car (OK, that last one was made up - I hope) they know alllll about me and my life.
