Backup cameras now REQUIRED in new cars in the US
« on: May 03, 2018, 01:41:13 am »

So why have mirrors become obsolete all of a sudden?  And does this "mandate" mean that extra costs are also "mandated"?  I don't really have a problem with backup cameras but I do have a problem with compulsion.

New cars sold in the U.S. must have backup cameras to help drivers avoid accidents under a federal regulation that took effect Wednesday.
The regulation requires rearview cameras and video displays on new models, a move aimed at preventing accidents in which pedestrians — often children — are run over because a driver can't see them as they back their vehicles.
Congress passed a law in 2008 requiring regulators to enact measures requiring the adoption of technology to greatly improve rearview visibility.

Backup cameras are neat but as soon as they become a requirement, no thanks.  New cars are already too expensive.  No need to add yet one more thing that will break down.

Why that's nearly as stupid as the requirement for electronic tire pressure monitors. Good lobbying by a backup camera manufacturer, I'd wager (were I the wagering sort).

My father-in-law has that in his vehicle.  He constantly watches it now.  His son was driving him around one time and it drove my bro-in-law nuts to hear, "what's the tire pressure?" every 2 minutes.  "same as it was the last time you asked..."
