How does every make their own yeast?

yea I know it is easier to just buy a little packet of the stuff, but how would one go about making it from scratch when the SHIF?

I've read one can make their own yeast with warm water and any number of fruits.  I've never done it myself but one of the wives in our group does make her own sourdough starter.  Wheat berries, warm water and then...  do stuff with it. 

I would practice my best google-fu and start researching if'n I wuz yoo.
