The real problem seems to be the age old question of who owns the children? The State, or the Parents?

I am a big believer in providing opportunities, but the busybodies need to make sure they do it with voluntary funds, not money that was stolen (taxes). And they need to make sure that they are never forcing anyone to benefit from the opportunities they want to provide.

And I think that for the majority, homeschool would be the best option. Name any of our founding fathers that were public schooled  :)
