The following is a transcript of a teaching experiment, using the Socratic method, with a regular third grade class in a suburban elementary school.

And what follows is a description of what happens when he attempts to introduce them to the idea of binary arithmatic. It is pretty cool! In about 20 minutes he leads a class of third graders to understand binary numbers and how to do arithmatic with them.

There are a ton of good essays on teaching by this same guy. Another very interesting one I just read is A common, but terrible mistake in teaching math and science

The following is a typical approach to teaching math and science and then testing the students on what they were taught.  Textbooks which have questions at the end of a unit or chapter will sometimes also make the same error, which tends to show up then in students' homework grades.  I will give two examples; one from math, and one from science.  (It has turned out, as you will see below, that the science example I chose is even much more difficult than I had thought when I chose it for being unfairly difficult in the first place.)
